João Fonseca wins the youth US Open – 09/09/2023 – Sport

Brazilian João Fonseca, 17, is the US Open youth champion. This Saturday (9), he beat the American Learner Tien, 17, by 2 sets to 1, with an upset (4-6, 6-4 and 6-3). With the victory, he becomes number 1 in the world for his category.

“Guys, thank you very much. Gratitude for all the work. I’m very happy to have won the tournament. Let’s go for more, for much more. Let’s work for it. This is Brazil”, he said after winning.

If there weren’t more Brazilians than Americans in the stands, the South Americans were noisier, with lots of vibrations and shouts of support for each point Fonseca won.

The match was scheduled for 3pm this Saturday, but was delayed by more than three hours due to rain in New York.

The Brazilian lost the first set and had to fight back in the second, when he started having his serve broken. From then on, however, both players began to lose their services. In the end, Fonseca prevailed 6-4.

In the third and decisive part, the same script: Tien first broke Fonseca’s serve, who managed to reverse the situation and win 6-3.

Carioca, Fonseca is the great promise of Brazilian tennis. He wins his first Grand Slam in the category the first time he reaches that stage in a singles tournament. He has reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the Australian Open; in doubles, he was also a finalist in Oceania this year. Last year, he was part of the Brazilian team that won the J=juvenile Davis Cup,

Earlier this year, when he competed in the Rio Open, his first professional tournament, he said he was inspired by the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.
