How did you think about this ending? Jão – Ever since I started making music professionally, I always knew that I wanted to create a series of albums and that they dealt with my life. For me, albums are documents. For each artist it means something and, for me, they are documents of my life. I wanted to be guided by this bigger thing, them being inspired by these elements. I knew it was going to be my last, that it was going to be the end of my 20s. I’m 28, I started “Lobos”, which is my first, at 22. I knew that these four albums were going to tell who I would be, who I would become. Humbly, I think this is the time. g1 – In some of the songs, like ‘Maria’ and ‘Rádio’, you make reference to the past, referring to life in the countryside, as a child and teenager, and having abandoned that life. The word ‘dream’ appears more than once and there is almost an apology for having left there to pursue your desires. What did you want to explore in this work? John – Exactly. In my mind, the album is well separated between Américo Brasiliense and São Paulo. The songs even get darker as it goes on. It’s really this duality, the countryside and the big city, who I wanted to transform myself into at the same time, am I that person? Am I able to do this? But I didn’t know what would happen in my life, if I would have the courage, if things would have worked out as I hoped they would. I’m glad you understood that because it’s a document and it’s a way of apologizing to myself, you know? For all the times I mistreated myself the most or doubted myself the most, or when I was most in prison because I had a very big dream, or because I wanted to do things that I was afraid to risk. So, it’s kind of a hug. g1 – On ‘Super’, you seem to be more open to experiencing love, relationships than on the other albums. Instead of getting more reactive, the songs show you wanting to live more in relationships. Do you really feel more open? John – I feel. I arrived at a moment of reflection… First I thought that on this record I would be a completely different person, changed, free of all traumas and all things. What I learned was that ‘not exactly’, but that I know how to deal with it in a more mature way. “I understand that I need to live and feel everything to have stories to tell, to have experiences and that I can’t close myself off and be reactive to everything. So even if the next album is me writing about ‘Oh my God, everything went wrong, I fucked up. again’, I think this one I’m ready to make it happen, regardless of what the outcome is.” g1 – Besides the word ‘dream’, which appears in more than one song, the phrase ‘I don’t feel bad, I don’t feel anything’ appears in two songs. You’re an artist who was also known for ‘suffering’ pop, you’ve already spoken about depression and mental health issues. What does this phrase represent today? Is it a feeling that still exists? Jão – It’s a feeling that sometimes wants to exist. At the end of the record, one of the last lines I say more than once is “I don’t feel anything” and after about 20 seconds, I say, “I feel everything, I want to feel everything” until the end. This trajectory is a lot. “I’ve always dealt very badly with my mental health and we didn’t even call it mental health. Nobody discussed it when it was the worst thing for me in my adolescence. I had very few conversations or references about it. There was no mention of depression. Depression was something adults had when, I don’t know, they were going through a tough time, so I couldn’t even verbalize what I had.” For a long time, because I didn’t have these references, there was no way to talk, vent about it, I just dealt with it, simply being anesthetized. And that’s the way I’ve dealt with it my whole life. And it’s one of the things in my life that I always want to go back and say, “No, this is happening. Calm down, you need to feel it.” Watch Jão’s best moments at Rock in Rio During some shows, during my career, people would say to me “ah, you romanticize sadness” and some kind of absurd things. I can’t imagine how anyone could romanticize sadness, it’s a feeling. And I wanted to convince myself of that, to learn that sadness is a feeling that I need to feel and I need to go through it, but I also need to move on. I learned that I need to feel things. And it didn’t always happen that way, it was one of the things that music brought me. g1 – In terms of sound, the album is very pop, ranging from an electronic track to a bit of indie rock. What was the intention? Jão – We always thought and idealized this record as a sound part of a great show. Obviously, there’s the part where I write, I’m there to tell a story and when it comes to giving life musically, it’s a little more methodical. But all these parts, I imagined there at the show, how people would respond, what moment the light would move, at what moment people would sing together. It was an album designed for a show, it was basically what guided us. “Besides that, I really wanted a nostalgic feeling from the record, both because it talks about my childhood, my adolescence, my journey to São Paulo. I love music that seems like you hear it for the first time and it has existed for a long time. I love that feeling.” I think we created some guitar riffs… Mainly in “Alinhamento Milenar”, which is one of my favorites, which the first time we went to do it, I said it sounded like a song I’d heard since my childhood. It’s a song that sounds like a song to me. I really wanted to make songs. We started playing around in the studio if it was a song or a song. Is it song? Then enter the disk. g1 – You are planning a tour with a show at Allianz Parque. How is this project? Jão – We are doing a show for The Town, which will be the first taste. I think the theme of this album is awesomeness. We are going to the Allianz and I want all of this, I say: “no, put more stuff, more fire, more scenography”, because I like that a lot. I really like to see this. I love shows where I feel like I completely disconnect from what’s going on in my life and go into another reality, and I want to cause that in people. And I think Brazilians need that too, we need to honor it. We are incredible artists, we can do amazing things, we can do everything.
