Criminal attack

Alleged attacker interacted with internet users who commented on the posts

The account on X (formerly Twitter) of first lady Rosângela Lula da Silva, Janja, was hacked during the night of Monday (11) and the criminal published offensive and politically critical messages.

In addition to the investigation opened by the Federal Police on the same night, the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) also moved and notified Elon Musk’s company extrajudicially to comment on the invasion. The agency requested the freezing of the @JanjaLula account until investigations are completed and records relating to the profile are preserved.

“Failure to comply with the measures required will be interpreted as an infringement of rights, including on the part of the platform, and may lead to the adoption of appropriate legal measures to compensate for damages, as well as the civil and criminal liability of the offenders”,

said the AGU letter sent during the early hours of the morning.

Until the end of this Tuesday morning (12), the first lady’s account on the social network had no publications. On another platform, Janja stated that she is “used to attacks on the internet” and that yesterday’s invasion is an attack that “many women suffer daily”.

She stated that the attack on her profile on X lasted “endless minutes” “typical of those who despise women, coexistence in society, democracy and the law”. The unusual message records lasted just over an hour, and the alleged attacker interacted with internet users who commented on the posts.

“I’m already used to attacks on the internet, as sad as it is to get used to something so absurd. But the reality is that the internet is a potent space for good and evil”,

said the first lady.

In total, the hacker published 44 posts, reaching an audience of 1.2 million Janja followers on X.

In one of the posts, the hacker published an audio with an “official statement” in which he said he was “aware” of the PF investigation, but minimized any type of responsibility.

“I want to let you know that I am aware that the Federal Police are investigating this here, but I don’t care. I know something will happen, maybe it won’t, maybe it will, it depends on the judicial system in this country, which is broken, by the way, and I’m a guy who really believes that the laws in this country are fragile, they’re rubbish and that only there are politicians stealing”,

says an excerpt from the audio.

In another post, the hacker asked followers to follow another social network account that allegedly belonged to the attacker. The @binuxy account has been taken offline. The account administrator identified himself in the profile as “nationalist, monarchist and neo-fascist”.

One of the posts on the profile made reference to the invasion, stating that “the majority of these invasions were done using leaked passwords, that’s easy. It’s even comical to talk about it. There are alternative methods of invasion.”

The attack on the First Lady’s profile was commented on by members of the government, such as the minister of the Presidency’s Social Communication Secretariat (Secom), Paulo Pimenta, who classified the authors as “criminal scoundrels” and that “cowards who share and comment distilling their hatred, prejudice and violence will also be identified.”

Repercussion of the case between left and right

After the invasion, left-wing politicians and activists began to use the case to defend Bill 2,630/2020 – called “PL of Fake News” and “PL of Censorship”, which is being processed in the Chamber of Deputies. The proposal seeks to regulate social networks in the country and is the target of criticism from the opposition for violating freedom of expression. Hacker invasion, however, already constitutes a crime under Brazilian legislation.

Among the right, the climate is one of distrust regarding the intentions of the author of the attacks, since the case occurs on the eve of Flávio Dino’s hearing, which may or may not guarantee the position of Minister of Justice for the STF. The issue is seen as a top priority among politicians and activists linked to the right, who see the hacker invasion as an attempt to divert attention from Dino’s vote while facilitating pressure from government officials for the advancement of the “Fake News PL”.
