Ives Gandra’s involvement in 8/1 is untrue, say entities

Sixteen entities published a note of reparation in favor of Ives Gandra da Silva Martins after the jurist was cited in a Federal Police inquiry investigating the invasion of the buildings of the Three Powers, on January 8.

In the document, the entities remember the professional trajectory of the jurist, who is the author of dozens of books, participates in national and international associations in favor of democracy, provided advice to constituents in 1988 and is a member of the Academia Paulista de Letras, among other activities.

The smear campaign against the jurist began after the Federal Police claimed to have found on the cell phone of Mauro Cesar Barbosa Cid, former assistant to Jair Bolsonaro, a questionnaire answered by Gandra Martins, in 2017. In the answers, the jurist explains the extension of article 142 of the Constitution, stating that it should never be used to break the democratic rule of law, “but to guarantee law and order”. The publication of the comment began to be used by leftists against Gandra Martins, who is conservative and has been one of the few representatives of the legal class to point out the excesses of the Judiciary.

In the redress note, the entities regret the distorted comments against the jurist’s performance. “The entities below subscribe and ratify the Note of Disappointment in favor of Professor Doctor Ives Gandra da Silva Martins in the face of untrue conclusions about his possible participation in anti-democratic acts, especially based on a position that he defends since the edition of the Comments to the Constitution of the Brasil, between 1988 and 1998, published in 15 volumes and approximately 12,000 pages by Editora Saraiva”, they say.
