How were the negotiations to come to Inter and your battle against Covid-19?
Gustavo Campanharo – For me it is an honor to be here wearing this shirt. It’s a childhood dream come true, being Colorado and from a Colorado family. Regarding Covid, I had surgery. It was a period of overcoming and learning, moments that I reflected a lot, but that was overcome. I went through difficult times, I was admitted to the hospital, and during that time we reflect and learn lessons. Always in difficult situations, we strengthen ourselves. It was like that with me. I recovered 100% and today I can play 100%.
What was it like telling your family that you were going to play for Inter?
campaign – It was a very big emotion. Since I was a child, it was a dream to wear this shirt. Since I started playing football, I’ve always had the goal of playing here at Inter. I tried to keep the information confidential and, when the conversations evolved, I was able to call everyone and break the news with emotion. After all these comings and goings, today being here in this place and wearing this shirt is a very big emotion. I’m sure we have a lot of history ahead of us and, if it’s up to me, I’ll honor this shirt.
How was the transition from midfielder to defensive midfielder in Europe?
campaign – I played another role, a little more advanced, second midfielder and I played as a midfielder. When I arrived in Turkey, there was a coach who saw this characteristic in me and made me the starting midfielder. From then on, I increased my numbers and my imposition on the field was different. Today, I can say that I am a number five and I feel good in this role.
Can you already play against CSA for the Copa do Brasil, on Tuesday?
campaign – I had been training, but we had a stoppage of games because of Data Fifa. But I’ve been training, I’m in the game rhythm. I feel good physically and mentally, I’m very motivated, but it depends on the committee knowing the right moment. Just two days that I’m not in training, also because of the trip here. I’m good and ready when the coach wants to put me on.
You had an important partnership in Türkiye with Pedro Henrique. Are you ready to team up with the striker?
campaign – I had a conversation with him. We reissue this duo at Inter. We had very happy times in Türkiye. We have a very nice friendship. He was able to tell me how things work in here, all the professionalism. I arrive to try to add, to give my best, to help in the best possible way and who knows how to re-edit this duo, which was very happy in Turkey.
How can the experience in Türkiye help you at Inter?
Campanharo – Knowing other countries, other cultures, we end up having to mature very quickly. It’s another market, we ended up learning a lot about tactics in Europe. I evolved a lot out there. This can add a lot here at Inter. I matured very quickly and at 31 I feel mature and ready to do my best.
What’s your game style? “Bither” steering wheel or technical marker?
campaign – Today I consider myself a biter. This function requires it. I also see, from my numbers, when I started acting as a defensive midfielder, I was one of the leaders in tackles in Turkey. I’m a guy who attacks the ball a lot. I can’t stand watching the guy come up and not take action. I’m a bit of an aggressive guy. I had to change my characteristics when I entered this role.
Did you ever play against Enner Valencia?
campaign – He’s a great player. I had a few games against him. He’s a very high quality player. I had a few moves with him, I came in a little stronger and we got weird on the pitch. But when the ball came out, we greeted each other. Departure thing. He is a great player who, if he comes, will add and help a lot. I hope he comes.
