Itamar Paim may take over Deltan’s vacancy in the Chamber next week

By decision of the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-PR), the rookie Itamar Paim (PL-PR) is the name that should assume the seat of Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR) in the Chamber of Deputies. Pastor of the 59th Church of the Foursquare Gospel, in São José dos Pinhais, in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, Paim ran for the first time for a political position in the 2022 elections, directly trying for a vacancy in the federal Legislative. For him, the news that he should occupy a vacancy in Congress was a surprise and, having overcome the bureaucratic procedures, he can assume next week.

While preparing the necessary documentation to assume the position, the 1st alternate of the PL says that he still does not have a precise date for it – but he has an estimate. “The party believes it should be next week. Of course, there is a demand for documentation, we are after that, and as soon as everything is ready, we will forward it and wait for the position regarding the date that will come for me to assume ”, he explains.

The expectation, he says, was to have entered by direct vote. “Unfortunately it was not possible. I place my position of solidarity with Deltan. I didn’t expect it to be like this, but we’re going to rise to the challenge,” he says. Deltan Dallagnol lost his mandate as a federal deputy after the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) rejected his candidacy registration, this Tuesday (16).

Paim joined the PL last year. Until then, he had not been linked to any party and had not considered becoming a political agent. “I have always believed in the importance of taking people seriously (in politics). Last year some conversations started to sprout and we tried the chair. It was all very fast.”

Regarding the guidelines he must defend, Paim does not detail projects, but says that they must be aligned with the right-wing conservative profile of the party – the same as that of former president Jair Bolsonaro, of whom he was a supporter in last year’s election campaign.

“We have several ideas to put into practice, but we are going to try to live one day at a time”, he says, adding that the fight against corruption and the defense of family and life values, among other conservative themes, should be his priorities.

The pastor believes that the party should be strengthened by assuming the vacancy in the Chamber. If there is no change in what was established, the entry of Itamar Paim means that the PL now has 100 federal deputies in the Chamber.

Itamar Paim was born in Paranaguá, is 46 years old and got 47,052 votes last year. The vacancy of Deltan Dallagnol, who would be the direct substitute for Podemos, Luiz Carlos Hauly, was allocated to the former PL candidate by decision of TRE-PR, with the justification that the party did not reach the minimum percentage of 10% of the quotient election, which in 2022 stood at 201,288 votes. Hauly had 11,925 votes, 8,200 short of the minimum required.

Asked about his opinion regarding a possible move by Podemos to guarantee the vacancy in the Chamber, Paim prefers not to comment. “I don’t interact about it. It is an issue that is being worked on by party lawyers (PL) ”, he concludes.

Itamar Paim was the 38th most voted federal deputy in the state and the 4th most voted in the party, currently represented in the Federal Chamber by deputies from Paraná Filipe Barros, Giacobo and Vermelho.
