The victory went to Italy, by 1 to 0, in the match against Argentina in the early hours of this Monday (24), in Auckland, New Zealand.
Cristina Girelli came off the bench and scored the goal at the end of the game, on the debut day of the two teams in the Women’s World Cup, in a match valid for group G, the same as Sweden and South Africa.
With a tied game, Italy had two goals annulled. The two teams went into the break with the score 0-0. Only the third, at the end of the second half, was valid.
The first annulled goal, at 15 minutes, had been scored by Arianna Caruso, who was in an irregular position. At 42, Giacinti also scored in offside.
With the same number of participations in World Cups, four, counting the current one, Italy and Argentina sought a positive result to be in a more comfortable position alongside Sweden, favorite of the group, which leads after a comeback victory over the South Africans.
The victory leaves Italy in second place in Group G, with three points and a goal difference. Sweden has the same number of points and difference, but scored two goals.
The two teams will play in the early hours of next Saturday.
