A survey carried out by the Ipsos Institute points out that approximately nine out of ten Brazilians (89%) say they believe in God or a higher power. The survey was carried out in 26 countries, with 19,731 respondents, 1,000 of them in Brazil, between January 20th and February 3rd of this year. The margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
Brazil appears at the top of the ranking in this regard, alongside South Africa (89%) and Colombia (86%). The countries where the fewest people claimed to believe in God were Japan (19%), South Korea (33%) and the Netherlands (40%). The global average is 61%.
Called “Global Religion2023”, the study was conducted through Ipsos’ Global Advisor online platform and, in India, through IndiaBus.
Brazilians also lead the world ranking of those who believe in the existence of a paradise: 79% of those interviewed in Brazil expressed this conviction — the same rate as in Peru.
At the other end, 66% of Brazilians said they believe there is a hell, an index that placed the country in second place in the category, behind Turkey (76%). Belgium (16%), Sweden (21%) and Spain (22%) are among those who least believe in hell.
The vast majority of Brazilians interviewed (90%) also state that believing in God or in superior forces makes it possible to overcome crises, such as diseases, conflicts and disasters.
In the survey, 76% of Brazilians say they follow some type of religion. Within this universe, the majority called themselves Christians (70%).
