International football transfers moved BRL 33 billion in 2022

The international football transfer market moved US$ 6.5 billion (R$ 33.2 billion) throughout 2022, an increase of 33.5% compared to 2021, as reported by FIFA in a report released this Thursday ( 26). According to the document, last year there were 71,002 transfers, of which 21,764 involved men’s and women’s football professionals. The other 49,238 refer to amateur athletes.
The study also reveals that Brazil was the country that had the highest number of players traded, with a total of 998 transfers to clubs in other countries. The highest number of signings was recorded in Portuguese football, with 901 athletes arriving in the country, and the teams that most profited were the French, who pocketed US$ 740.3 million (R$ 23.8 billion).
Men’s professional football had 20,209 international transfers in 2022, an increase of 11.6% compared to 2021 and which is higher than 2019 levels, before the Covid-19 pandemic. The amount moved in 2019, however, is still the highest in history, as it reached US$ 7.35 billion (R$ 37.3 billion).
According to FIFA, the ten biggest signings of 2022 alone generated 12.5% of the entire amount invested in transfer fees. Of the 2,843 transfers that included fees, the top 100 accounted for nearly 50% of the total amount. The biggest investments came from English clubs, which moved almost US$ 2.2 billion (R$ 11.2 billion).
The figures released by Fifa also show greater amounts invested in women’s football. The number of international transfers has more than doubled since 2018, and the number of clubs in the sport involved in these deals rose from 410 in 2021 to 500 last year, an increase of 22%.
