International Beer Day, understand the origin of the date – 08/04/2023 – Full Glass

Legend has it that the origin of beer dates back to 9,000 BC There are also indications that man built cities in 6,000 BC, and that brewing was something apparently organized (I pasted this one from Larousse da Cerveja).

However, International Beer Day is a little younger, it was only created in 2007, AD.

Not that in the 21st century any excuse was needed to go to the bar of your choice for a beer, but a group of four friends was more excited.

Jesse Avshalomov, Aaron Araki, Evan Hamilton and Richard Hernandez were at a Santa Cruz, California bar when they suggested August 5th as International Beer Day. California is one of the cradles of the boom in IPAs and American craft breweries, a movement that spread throughout the world, reaching Brazilian lands.

It didn’t take long for the “holiday” to spread to other American breweries and cities and become a worldwide celebration. Between 2007 and 2012, the day was fixed, August 5th. Since then, the date has been changed to the first Friday of August — this year, the 4th.

The celebration would also have a kind of letter of intent, with three basic and almost “polyanic” precepts:

1 – Get together with friends to enjoy good beers;
2 – Show appreciation to the people responsible for brewing and serving beer;
3 – Celebrating beers from different cultures and nations on a single date

The celebrations around the date change a little according to the country or the mood of the brewery, but can include new label releases or opening of rare beers, happy hour promotion all day, beer games (how about a “beer pong “?) etc.

In São Paulo, International Beer Day is usually celebrated with discounts and promotions in pubs, brewpubs and taprooms. See a list of addresses here.

Another date close to the first Friday of August has received more importance around here. The first Saturday in August celebrates IPA Day SP. This year, the party brings together 27 versions of Indian pale ales under one roof at Tarantino Brewery. But other breweries promote their IPAs, like Hocus Pocus (in Rio and São Paulo), which launches four labels of IPAs this week.

Whether on International Beer Day, or on IPA Day SP, drink in moderation, don’t drive and cheers.
