International award opens enrollment for schools with sustainability projects

Awarded teaching units will receive BRL 15,000 in the national phase and BRL 25,000 in the international phase, as an incentive for the continuity of sustainable practices

Students and educators from schools in the state education network of Amazonas, which develop sustainability projects, have until August 23 to register for the Sustainable Schools Award. Organized by the Santillana Group, the Santillana Foundation and the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) for Education, the award is aimed at public and private schools in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

For the contest, projects developed until the end of May, which mobilized and made the population aware of the need for preservation and socio-environmental recovery of the planet, will be accepted. Applications must be made on the website www.premioescolassustentaveis.com.

The award is divided into two stages, one national, covering projects from all schools in the country, and one international. The winning schools will receive, in the national stage, the amount of R$ 15 thousand in each category, as a form of incentive for the continuity of their sustainable practices. In the international phase, the amount will be R$25,000.

National Stage

Six winners will be selected from each country, three referring to Elementary School and three to High School. The winning schools that are in 1st place, in each category, Elementary and Middle School, in each country, will be classified to participate in the international selection.

The current manager of Regular Education (GER), of the State Department of Education and School Sports, Yamiles Souza, highlighted the objective of the program and the topics it should cover.

“The objective is to recognize sustainable projects that have been created and developed within schools, both here in Brazil and in Mexico and Colombia. The projects must be related to themes of the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) agenda, which means environment, social and governance”,

explained the manager.

Education in environmental awareness

The registered projects must be carried out by teams of students and members present in the schools, such as teachers, managers, among other educators, and must impact both the internal environment of the teaching unit and the external one.

The general secretary of OEI, Mariano Jabonero, spoke about the importance of schools in sustainability issues and how they should promote this sustainable environmental awareness among students, which will contribute to changes in the future.

“Promoting students’ interest and knowledge of the ecosystem that surrounds them makes them responsible for designing proposals that, based on theory and practice, can generate positive results that mitigate the consequences of the adverse effects of climate change”, .
