Inter-American Commission demands punishment for Yanomami crisis – 02/08/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Special Rapporteurship on Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Rights (Redesca), an office linked to the body, issued this Wednesday (8) a statement in which they criticize the failure of Brazilian authorities to ignored the “situation of violence” faced by the Yanomami.

The body claims that the violations that generated the humanitarian crisis would have occurred “in the last two years”, a period in which Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was at the head of the Presidency of the Republic.

“Despite multiple complaints and requests for protection by the Yanomami people, [essas autoridades] ignored the situation of violence, attacks and murders against members of this population”, says the IACHR, in a note.

“The commission and Redesca urge the State of Brazil to intensify its efforts to repair and revert the humanitarian and human rights crisis that affects the Yanomami population. Specifically, they ask for the protection of the rights to life, personal integrity, health, food, water and the environment, as well as the land, territories and natural resources of this population”, he further states.

The body and the rapporteurship demand that crimes and human rights violations committed against the Yanomami people be investigated, “whether by action or omission of State agents or individuals”, and that indigenous people be guaranteed access to justice and reparation .

They also demand that the Brazilian State act in the prevention, control, investigation and sanction against business activities established in the indigenous territory and in the fight against illegal mining in the region.

“The IACHR and Redesca make themselves available to cooperate with the Brazilian State in relation to this critical situation of the Yanomami people and express their interest in being able to carry out a working visit as soon as possible, to verify in loco the scope of the crisis and be able to contribute to solutions that have a rights-based approach,” the statement reads.

As shown to Sheetthe Lula government began operations to try to dismantle illegal mining in the Yanomami Indigenous Land and remove the more than 20,000 prospectors who have invaded the territory over the last few years.

Agents from Ibama (Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) visited the indigenous land on Monday (6th) and Tuesday (7th). They destroyed a helicopter, a plane, a tractor and structures that provided logistics for a mining area. Two guns and three boats with around 5,000 liters of fuel were also seized.

Operations to try to dismantle illegal mining on Yanomami land will also involve members of the Armed Forces and the PF (Federal Police).

The Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, and the commanders of the Forces traveled to Boa Vista (RR) this Wednesday (8) to monitor the actions.
