Integralist deputy proposes to pay homage to Enéas and dead brother – 04/16/2023 – Panel

In the first projects he presented as a federal deputy, Paulo Fernando Melo da Costa (DF), integralist leader affiliated with the Republicans, proposed tributes to Enéas Carneiro (1938-2007), an icon of the extreme right, and Friar Orlando, a Franciscan chaplain who died after taking shot in Italy in February 1945, in World War II, and became a patron of the Army’s religious assistance.

Integralism is a fascist-inspired movement created by Plínio Salgado in 1932, characterized by an authoritarian nationalism, defense of religious and traditional values ​​and rejection of liberal democracy.

Defender of these same values, Enéas was supported by Integralists during his political trajectory, especially by the bellicose, nationalist and anti-communist discourse.

In 2021, as the Panel showed, Paulo Fernando was received by Marcelo Queiroga to collect testimony about Enéas, of whom the then Minister of Health was a student and who is the subject of a biography being prepared by the current parliamentarian.

In his bills, the deputy requires the denomination of the place of medical service of the Chamber of Deputies as “Dr. Enéas Ferreira Carneiro, Physician and Federal Deputy” and requests the holding of a solemn session in memory of the 16 years of the death of the honoree.

About Friar Orlando, he asks for his name to be inscribed in the Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Fatherland.

Costa has been recognized for years by Integralist publications as a reference figure for the group. He worked as deputy secretary and special advisor at the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights in the administration of current Senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF), who campaigned for his friend. The Brazilian Integralist Front included Costa and also Damares in its 2022 vote recommendation list.

In an interview with the Panel last year, Costa said he was an “integralist adapted to the 21st century, and not the 30’s, which makes no sense.”

“I am a supporter of the trilogy that integralism defends: ‘For God, for the Homeland and for the Family’, which the [então] President Bolsonaro, the PTB and the Republicans added freedom,” he added.

“I’m a lawyer known for my pro-life work. Firm positions,” he said, describing himself as a patriot in the 21st century.
