The insurance sector paid more than BRL 450 billion in indemnities last year, a growth of 13% compared to 2021, according to data released by CNSeg, the confederation that represents companies in the sector. The amount is equivalent to five times the budget of the Brazil Aid for 2022.

According to CNSeg, the R$ 450 billion correspond to payments of indemnities, redemptions, benefits and raffles.

The sector also registered an increase of 11.7% in the demand for insurance services (without DPVAT), with a total collection of R$ 618 billion.

CNSeg released data for the 1st quarter of this year and states that there was a 1.2% increase in the amounts paid in indemnities and redemptions, reaching approximately R$ 60 billion.

Spending in the pandemic

Data from FenaSaúde, an entity that is part of CNSeg, show that health plans cost BRL 30.4 billion in procedures against the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil.

In all, 585,000 hospitalizations were made possible, 30% of which in the ICU, 1.1 million serological tests and 6.9 million RT-PCR tests. Around 9.2 million telehealth consultations were also registered.

The data were consolidated with information from five FenaSaúde associated operators. Together, they serve 10 million beneficiaries of medical plans (about 20% of the sector).
