‘Insensitive and irresponsible’, says Minister of Mines and Energy of Bolsonaro’s policy on Petrobras – 02/28/2023 – Panel

In a message to the Panel, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, attacked former President Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) policy for Petrobras.

The state-owned company is at the center of the fuel re-encumbrance debate, a measure adopted in the previous administration that the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) decided to review on Monday (27).

Also attacking former Economy Minister Paulo Guedes, Silveira claims that the “insensitive policy” adopted by the two resulted in expensive gasoline and disorganization of the strategic plan.

“The insensitive and irresponsible policy of Paulo Guedes and Bolsonaro took everything that was built and sacrificed Brazilian men and women, charging expensive gasoline and selling properties essential to the strategic plan of a company like Petrobras, which has abandoned its also social function, as foreseen the Federal Constitution.”

According to the minister, Petrobras under Bolsonaro withdrew from the states and favored the sale of crude oil abroad, a tax-free transaction.

“We are going to have a profitable Petrobras again, but for investments in the future, not with profits selling household silverware or with expensive gasoline”, justified the minister.

The government announced this Monday (27th) that it will return to charging federal taxes on gasoline and ethanol starting on Wednesday (1st).

The details of the taxation on fuels have not yet been announced and government allies still spoke this Monday that it should have some gradualism and scaling. The expectation is that there will be some definition still this Tuesday (28).

“Definitely, they cannot be essential tributes to improve housing, roads, electricity, fight hunger and the misery of the Brazilian people that must finance the profit of whoever it may be”, predicts Silveira.

He also highlights Lula’s management in his first two terms. “President Lula’s government discovered the pre-salt layer, generated jobs, development and innovation throughout the country”, he compares.
