Indira Nascimento comments on the various hairstyles adopted by Laís in ‘Travessia’: ‘Black woman with freedom’

Seen in her most prominent role in soap operas, Indira Nascimento is the personification of elegance as the lawyer Laís, from “Travessia”. In addition to appearing on stage with an impeccable costume, she always changes her hair. In conversation with the column, the actress says that the character inspires many women to be freer and talks about the drama of Laís, who does not know how to deal with the digital addiction of her youngest son, Theo (Ricardo Silva).

How has the repercussion of your work on “Travessia” been?

People meet me and make a point of stopping me at the market or on the beach to talk about Laís. Some say they didn’t know me, but that they were positively surprised.

What is the importance of this core of middle-class black people in the telenovela?

It is of paramount importance to have a black middle-class family with dark actors in the nine o’clock soap opera. It is a step that we take towards what we believe. Black bodies need to be increasingly humanized. The characters are just symbols, they are there as representatives of something that exists or something that we want to exist. And the theme that the Monteiro family is portraying is universal. It could happen to any other family.

Now, Laís and Monteiro (Aílton Graça) will blame each other for Theo’s situation. Will the couple have conflicts?

They start looking for culprits. The two were on this journey together, but they will start to feel strange.

Laís is stylish, uses laces and natural hair. Do many women talk about her look?

She has one of the most beautiful costumes in the soap opera. She is empowered. Many people talk about it. The issue of changing hair caused a lot of feelings in the public, positive and not so much. I received a message from a psychologist saying that the patient, a white woman, took this to therapy: she was very uncomfortable with the fact that Laís changed her hair. The psychologist went to treat this discomfort and arrived at a racism of the patient, who could not accept a black woman with that freedom. But I also received reports of happy black women thanking me. Many said they wanted to change their hair, but were criticized.

Are you vain?

I am a leonine, very vain, I like to feel beautiful. I have become more and more aware of my skin care. I’m always wearing sunscreen, taking care of my body.

Because of the soap opera, you now have a long-distance relationship with your partner. How is this experience?

It is the first time that we are experiencing this circumstance and having a long-distance relationship is challenging. But we have managed to deal with it. There are more difficult days, others easier. That’s natural. Our dialogue is open and this makes us stronger.
