Since February, the regulatory agency has taken action to block signals and prevent the sale of clandestine equipment used to access pay TV content without paying. The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) carried out 52 operations this year that resulted in the blocking of 3,900 clandestine TV box servers. The data is part of the most recent balance released by the agency, this Thursday (14). Having an unapproved TV Box is a crime, because whoever buys this product accesses pay TV content illegally without paying. Furthermore, users who access this type of equipment put the security of their data at risk. “Anatel’s objective is to remove unapproved TV boxes from Brazilian homes. These devices do not have technical assistance, there is no guarantee of data security, and can become vectors of digital attacks on the user’s network or on the networks of telecommunications providers” , warns Anatel director Artur Coimbra. The Brazilian Pay Television Association estimates that, per year, the impact of piracy on pay TV could reach R$15 billion. Therefore, Anatel wants to increase blocking actions next year. The agency estimates that, currently, 5 to 7 million illegal devices are in use in Brazil. “For 2024, we must expand blocking operations, strengthening the fight against piracy of audiovisual content in Brazil, and expand the fight against the trade and use of clandestine TV boxes”, explains Coimbra. One of the regulatory body’s strategies is to block signals from illegal TV boxes during weekends and during broadcasts of major events. On the 6th, the regulatory body used this tactic and managed to block the use of applications used for piracy and 1,200 illegal streaming sites in the broadcast of the last round of Série A of the Brasileirão.
