In Manaus, hospitals train new Libras professionals to provide care

During the course, health professionals will learn the importance of sign language for interaction with patients and caregivers

The project “Inclusion of the Brazilian Sign Language in Health” started a new class of the Libras course for health professionals at the Hospital and Emergency Room Dr. João Lúcio and the Children’s Hospital and Emergency Room-East Zone (Joãozinho), units of the State Health Secretariat (SES-AM), in patient care.

All professionals who work in the health area, such as managers, concierge agents, receptionists, nurses, psychologists, doctors, porters, among other workers at the two units, are included in the project.

According to the director of the Hospital e Pronto-Socorro da Criança Zona Leste and creator of the project, Liége Ribeiro, the creation of new classes reinforces the importance of having more professionals certified in pounds in the health network of Amazonas to better welcome patients with hearing deficiency.

“When we certified the first group of professionals in service in Libras, we already scheduled a new group with more vacancies, so that more employees could have access to training and thus offer better service to the deaf community”, he said.

The first edition of the project trained 20 professionals from the units and was carried out in partnership with the State Secretariat for Education and Sports (Seduc-AM). During the course, participants had basic knowledge of Libras and the laws that recognize the language as a legal means of communication and expression for the deaf person.

“We envisage an excellent service in the reception of deaf users who seek the health services of the two units, thus becoming a reference, both in the capital and in the interior, as health units that are prepared to welcome this profile of users”, highlighted the Director of HPS João Lúcio, João Carlos da Costa.

Training

The course lasts two and a half months, with a workload of 80 hours, which includes 60 hours of dynamic and theoretical classes, in addition to 20 hours of practical activities.

During the course, health professionals will learn the importance of sign language for interaction with patients and guardians; and experience the need for accessibility to health and the promotion of humanization of care for the deaf community.

Classes will take place in the training room at HPS João Lúcio and will be taught by Cláudio Saraiva, a translator and interpreter of Libras at the Amazonas Education Media Center.

The course will have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with classes divided into morning and afternoon periods. On Fridays, there will be an advanced module for students who participated in the first class.

Pounds

Libras was officially recognized as the second official language in Brazil through Law No. 10,436 of 2002, and regulated by Decree 5626 of April 21, 2005, in 2012, with the LBI – Brazilian Law for Inclusion and Accessibility in the national territory.
