In his YouTube program, Lula criticized the recent lunches offered by presidents Sergio Mattarella, in Italy, and Emmanuel Macron, in France.
In the American Bloomberg, “Lula’s last gaffe is criticizing the food he received in Italy and France” and, just below, “Brazilian leader says that meals in Europe ‘were not so good'” (below). On the Politico website, from the German group Axel Springer, “Lula complains about the French and Italian palace food” and “The Brazilian president was unhappy with the size of the portions”:
It was not possible to find a reaction in the French press, but the Italian one covered it widely, with statements such as “Lula does not hide his disappointment: small portions at lunch at [Palácio do] Quirinale”, in Il Tempo (above). The statements focused on the portions, but with variants such as “Lula (not very diplomatic) says he is disappointed with the cuisine at Quirinale and Élysée”.
Phrases such as “everything is small, there isn’t a large tray to choose from, it can be sweet, but I like quantity”. Also “everything is very sophisticated, sometimes you don’t even know what it is”, adding that he prefers “rabada” or “chicken”, with spellings in Portuguese, and complains that the Itamaraty did not allow feijoada in the dinners it offers.
