Imprisoned for 5 months, Naime is 14 kg less and son with serious illness

Since February 7, Colonel Jorge Eduardo Naime, former commander of the Operations Department of the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF), has been preventively arrested by order of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

The arrest is related to an alleged omission in relation to the violent acts of January 8 in Brasilia. However, the police officer was on vacation on the day of the depredations and even so, upon learning of what had happened, he went to Praça dos Três Poderes and began to command the troops to demobilize the demonstrators.

During the action, he arrested vandals and was even hit by a rocket fired by one of the demonstrators, which caused several injuries to his legs. Even so, almost a month after the episode, he was arrested on suspicion of omission during the attacks.

In all, the officer’s defense has already submitted four requests for his release. The last negative occurred in early July. In the decision, Moraes said that it is “evident the need to maintain custody to safeguard public order and for the convenience of criminal instruction”. According to the minister, there is a risk that the investigated person may, in freedom, “compromise the investigations, the collection of evidence and the criminal prosecution”.

In prison, the officer goes through a delicate health situation: he has already lost 14 kilos, has depression and has comorbidities. He has not seen any of his five underage children since February, as the court has not yet authorized the visit requests. One of the children, aged 14, is in a delicate health situation – he has hydrocephalus and Chiari Syndrome, and his condition has worsened since his father’s arrest.

Early this Thursday (13), the colonel had a drop in blood pressure and, when he fell, he tried to lean on a closet, which ended up falling on him, which made him be taken to the hospital. The family fears that his health condition, especially diabetes, is evolving and is trying in court to authorize specialist doctors to consult him.

“His biggest regret was having left home to contain the protesters”, says lawyer

When participating, on June 26, in the CPMI of the acts of January 8 as a witness, Naime was moved, said he did not know why he was arrested and highlighted his role in combating acts of violence to confront the hypothesis of omission.

“I’ve been in prison for five months without really knowing why I’m in prison. I was on leave, I was asked to be on the scene on the 8th, I introduced myself. The situation on the 8th begins to resolve itself, and the public buildings begin to be vacated exactly when I arrive and begin to command the Military Police troops”.

To the report, the colonel’s defense stated that he had requested the vacation in advance and regularly enjoyed the period, including the appointment of an officer to perform his function during the period of absence.

“The biggest regret of his life was going there to help contain the protesters. He had no obligation to go, and if he had stayed at home none of this would have happened”, says Gustavo Macarenhas, who is part of Naime’s defense.

“I advised Minister Marcos Aurélio for three years, my partner advised Gilmar for four years. We understand well the investigation dynamics in the Supreme Court. This prison of his makes no sense, the account does not close. None of the investigations qualifies the arrest”, says the lawyer. “Basically it is as follows: Minister Alexandre has the game ball and if he wants to release it, release it. If he doesn’t want to, don’t let go”, he continues.

Wife points out injustice and awaits Naime’s release so that her son can be operated on

In an interview with People’s Gazettethe colonel’s wife, Mariana Adôrno Naime, questions the fact that her husband, who was outside the planning of operations, was arrested, in contrast to several other authorities who were directly involved in coordinating security in Brasilia.

“When he was surprised by the events, he made himself available and stayed on the Esplanade until 3 am. What omission is there in this? It is very unfair that the people who were responsible for the planning, coordination and operation are on the loose, and he, who didn’t know anything, is imprisoned. Why was he chosen?”, he asks.

Regarding the son who has a delicate health condition, she says that the boy has already undergone eight surgeries, the last one two years ago. According to the doctors, he must undergo a new surgery due to the Chiari syndrome, aggravated by his father’s estrangement. A psychological report that the report had access points to “generalized anxiety”, “severe emotional suffering” and “post-traumatic stress disorder”.

“When Naime was arrested, his condition began to get worse: more intense headaches, vomiting, pain and anxiety. Also for Naime, stuck without knowing we’re entering. It is very difficult to deal with all of this”, says Mariana.
