When someone asks Lula and his allies what the PT plans for 2026, they spend half the answer on the warning that it is silly to talk about the subject so soon. The other half of the time, they allow themselves to hint at what they think.

Two weeks ago, Lula told SBT that “it would be irresponsible” to discuss now the chance of running for re-election. Then, she left her judgment aside and joked about the case of Joe Biden, who must run at age 81: “That’s a stimulus. I’m younger than he is.”

One of Lula’s objectives is to avoid a vacuum that encourages the opposition and encourages a premature race for succession within the government. “I will not allow my minister to do politics ahead of time,” he said.

It’s not just a tactical move. The president has already shown signs that he may even run for re-election depending on the circumstances of 2026. “If a moment comes, there is a delicate situation and I am healthy…”, he told RedeTV in February.

The “delicate situation”, evidently, would be the risk of defeat for the left. Lula will run for re-election if he wants to, but he suggests that the definition would be conditional on the absence of another name to win the right.

The determining factors for the decision will be the state of the economy at the end of the government and the credit that voters will give to Fernando Haddad.

The Minister of Finance marks his position as the first in line. In an interview with Sheet, he said that Lula’s successor must be from the PT, despite the movement of allies in other parties. When talking about his mission in the government, he stated that the president may run for re-election or present another name “if the project continues to go well”.

Lula is a natural candidate for re-election if the economy turns strong and the government’s assessment keeps pace. But this could also be the opportunity for a passing of the baton within the PT — and specifically for Haddad. The president can run for re-election if the race is tough or even open the way if the wind is favorable.
