The IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) announced this Tuesday (7) an update of the methodology and samples of its sector surveys.

The agency will disclose, at the end of March and in the first half of April, the PIM (Monthly Industrial Survey) Brazil and Regional, the PMC (Monthly Survey of Commerce) and the PMS (Monthly Survey of Services) for the month of January with new historical series.

According to the IBGE, this is an update already planned and recommended to capture economic changes that influence society’s routine. This type of procedure has been implemented over the years by the institute.

The previous historical series will be linked with the new ones to form “long and consistent temporal series”, stated the IBGE.

PIM will expand sample and states

In the case of PIM, the sample will have 8,596 companies and 12,500 local units, compared to 6,100 and 7,800 in the previous model, respectively.

The number of products surveyed will increase from 944 to 1,042, with 789 for Brazil and another 253 selected based on regional relevance.

“Some products not selected for Brazil may be chosen for some unit of the federation or region. For this reason, the set of products that are part of the national index is lower than the total surveyed”, pointed out the IBGE.

The update was based on the 2019 PIA (Annual Industrial Survey) registration of companies and products. The PIA is also carried out by the institute and allows the identification of the structural characteristics of Brazilian industrial activity.

“Although it is not the last edition of the survey, the 2019 PIA was chosen due to the fact that 2020 was an atypical year due to the pandemic”, said the coordinator of Conjunctural Surveys in Companies of the IBGE, Flávio Magheli.

Another PIM novelty is the inclusion of three new locations: Rio Grande do Norte, Maranhão and Mato Grosso do Sul.

PMC will include wholesale

In the case of PMC, one of the main updates is the addition of specialized food wholesale activities. They are called attackers.

Until then, the revenues of supermarkets classified as wholesale trade were not investigated, and an important part of sales in this segment was not identified, according to the IBGE.

“It is an important change, because they are companies that gained strength during the pandemic and, by including them in the survey, we now have a better picture of retail and wholesale food activity,” said Magheli.

“This is related to changes in consumption because, in an environment of inflation and falling income, families began to consume or increase the volume of consumption in these companies classified as wholesale”, he added.

PMS will have separate data for accommodation and food

The PMS, in turn, will start disclosing accommodation and food information in two different series – one for accommodation and the other for food. Currently, the two activities are aggregated in the calculations.

The accommodation and food branches include companies such as bars, restaurants and hotels, which suffered with the arrival of the pandemic and showed a recovery with the end of the restrictions of the health crisis.

Separation is one of the measures aimed at expanding the detail of information.
