Ibama will remain in Yanomami land until the end of the year, says future president – 02/12/2023 – Panel

Rodrigo Agostinho, future president of Ibama (Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), claims to have enough budget to maintain the operation against mining in the Yanomami Indigenous Land at least until the end of this year.

“I have the budget to remain present there for a long time. We are also starting to organize operations in other indigenous lands with problems similar to mining, logging and biopiracy. Anything that is illegal will be fought”, he says.

A Sheet showed this Saturday that the flow of vessels carrying supplies and fuel to feed the mining continues, an indication that those involved in the activity are betting on the withdrawal of the federal government in the coming days. The history of operations in the region is one-off operations.

Agostinho says that in addition to Ibama’s own budget, partnerships with external financiers should also be used to guarantee the protection of the forest and the Yanomami population. The institute is working on a project to present to the Amazon Fund and raise funds to combat illegal activities.

According to him, the objective is not to dry ice, but to reach the funders of the activity. The weapons that have been seized, for example, are being tracked to identify who is supplying them.

In addition to the difficulties in accessing the region of dense forest, Agostinho points out that part of the indigenous land is located in Venezuela, where the Brazilian government cannot act. The former deputy reports that aircraft were seen leaving mining areas and heading towards the neighboring country. He defends joint actions to effectively strangle mining.

Another difficulty has been the team constraint. Ibama works today with only 53% of its staff, he says.

Agostinho ended his mandate as a federal deputy in February and, although he is already following the body’s activities, he is still waiting to take office at Ibama. His name is among others that were delayed due to the high volume of appointments that have been made in this early management. The expectation is to complete the bureaucracy in the coming days.
