Ibama seizes parts of dead animals at Guarulhos airport (SP) – 09/20/2023 – Environment

In an operation carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Federal Revenue Service, Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Natural and Renewable Resources) seized several parts and limbs of dead animals that arrived illegally at Guarulhos international airport, in Greater São Paulo. .

Among the seizures are the head of a baboon, impaled rats, jars of bear bile and the heads of several birds. According to Ibama, among the species found are some protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Furthermore, part of the material found is considered to pose a potential risk for introducing diseases into Brazil and was without documentation of origin.

Carried out at the airport’s cargo terminal, the operation also found 11,000 ornamental fish of different species. Federal environmental agents blocked an attempt to export the fish to Taiwan, without the mandatory documentation.

On another front of the operation, inspectors intercepted international postal shipments to the United States, France and Spain with 15 kilos of swim bladders from unidentified species, handicrafts made with feathers from wild birds, such as macaws and parrots, jaguar teeth, alligators and collared peccaries, fragments of chelonian shells, alligator skulls, birds of prey, ray tails and corals. The materials were seized and the senders were fined.

According to Ibama, a Nigerian passenger and a Chinese passenger were fined for attempting to enter Brazil with items without an official technical opinion or license from the competent environmental authority.
