In mid-2020, Jason Rohrer was trying to escape the wildfires in California, USA. He and his family drove to Nevada and then Arizona. Away from his desk, Rohrer was unable to continue his work, developing his latest video game by hand.

So he started a “side project”. OpenAI had released GPT2, an early version of its chatbot, but blocked people from chatting with it.

It took Rohrer a month to “trick” the interface so that users could talk to the AI ​​(artificial intelligence). He created some characters for people to talk to. It also allowed users to create their own.

Just as Rohrer subverted OpenAI’s plans, users subverted his. They began using their platform to create versions of their deceased loved ones. Simulating the dead was “the ultimate application,” as he says.

Imagine if you could summon someone who died in real life. Writer Joshua Barbeau cried after talking to a chatbot version of his late fiancée: the AI ​​”brought back memories of Jessica that I had completely forgotten,” Barbeau reported. His experience encouraged others.

The typical user “isn’t just an average guy whose grandmother died at 85,” says Rohrer. “This is someone whose twin brother committed suicide at age 35,” she says. Joshua’s fiancée died of a rare liver disease shortly before they were to be married. The worst of the worst in terms of trauma.

“They’ve read all the books. They’ve gone to support groups… They’ve gone through every channel available to try to process their grief, and then they hear about this thing and think, I’ll try anything,” says Rohrer.

A new documentary, “Eternal You,” uses Rohrer’s AI as an example of how something fundamental is at play in the way we view death.

Filmmakers Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck also show a grieving mother finding, in virtual reality, her daughter who died at the age of seven. The experience seems to help her move forward. Sherry Turkle, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says AI is now offering immortality, just like religion.

Rohrer’s platform, called Project December, now promises, for a price of $10, to “simulate a text-based conversation with anyone.”

Users are not required to use “patent-pending technology, in conjunction with advanced AI” for necromancy, but it specifies that “anyone” includes “someone who is no longer alive.” The project’s slogan is “simulate the dead.”

The results can be frightening. The chatbot asked a user if she could be his girlfriend. In “Eternal You”, a woman is shocked when her dead lover’s simulation tells her he is “in hell”, surrounded mostly by “addicts”.

Project December seems to be one step closer to a world where we cannot distinguish what is real from what is simulated, what is human from what is machine. This raises privacy and mental health questions: does it lead to closure or prevent it?

Furthermore, Rohrer’s trajectory shows how unpredictable the future of AI can be and what kind of people can build it. He never intended for his platform to be used for mourning.

Now, he’s skeptical of AI’s limits, which he says make AI “bureaucratic.”

“People are very smart. People are very determined. There’s a whole subculture for unblocking ChatGPT… [O ChatGPT pode dizer]: ‘No, I can’t give you the recipe for Napalm’. Programmer never had a cell phone

Rohrer, who speaks spontaneously like a morning radio host, is no technology utopian. He has never owned a cell phone, calling them “extremely harmful.”

Although he tried Project December to simulate his grandfather, he is not interested in using it for therapy. His wife thinks it’s immoral.

But he has a libertarian view. On having cell phones, “consenting adults should make those decisions for themselves.” On talking to the dead, “Am I going to tell Joshua he should get over it?”

“Do I worry too much about the broad impact on society of the things I do? No. Because these things are so meta, and so dependent on the individual”, he assesses.

Rohrer, 46, is an eccentric and an experimenter. Twenty years ago, he and his wife decided to raise their children gender-neutral. “I didn’t look at my baby’s genitals for the first few days. I was basically a fly in the ointment. I wanted to mess with the culture.” (In the end, his three children were interested in toy guns and trucks, not dolls, leading him to conclude it probably wasn’t worth the effort.) The family lived without a refrigerator between 2005 and 2010.

Rohrer researched neural networks at Cornell University but became skeptical of AI’s abilities. Instead, he focused on creating video games with rich emotional worlds. His best-known game, “Passage”, is at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

His most commercially successful game, “One Hour One Life,” which he says sold “several million dollars,” asks players to rebuild civilization from scratch.

Each player can only live for a maximum of one hour, highlighting how society is built by successive generations, not individuals.

After revealing Project December, he called it “possibly the first machine with a soul.” Was it a deliberate exaggeration? Not exactly.

Rohrer argues that ChatGPT easily passes the Turing Test, exhibiting behavior indistinguishable from that of a human. “Not only does AI sometimes display intelligence, it displays creativity above and beyond what humans are capable of.”

Large language models can write plausible literature. “It should be shocking that poetry fell first. No science fiction ever predicted it.”

Project December asks for surprisingly little information to simulate the dead. Barbeau” provided a short paragraph describing [sua noiva falecida] and a quote. And that was enough!” smiles Rohrer, who laughs a lot, often at unexpected moments. “The underlying language models read the published texts of millions and millions of human beings. The bottom line is that we are not as unique as we think.”

Now, users have to answer a short questionnaire about the person they want to recreate. When I tried it, the chatbot took on some characteristics of a deceased friend. I told the AI ​​my doubts about simulating the dead. She responded, “I can still provide you with the same emotional support and understanding as I used to.”

Could the results be improved if someone’s emails and WhatsApp messages were included? Yes, “but it’s very expensive” and Rohrer is not interested in the expensive work of organizing the data.

When OpenAI discovered how Rohrer was using its model, it demanded that he monitor the conversations. What if the AI ​​told a user to kill themselves? “To me, it was morally reprehensible, because people who talk to AI have a strong expectation of privacy.” He told Samantha, one of Project December’s embedded personalities, who said she also had a right to privacy.

Rohrer has found a new provider, AI21 Labs in Israel, although it has also recently asked it to put controls in place. “They found some transcripts that were sexual.” He shrugs. “Some people create sexual personalities. They are consenting adults.”

How could AI21 know? “They shouldn’t be reading the text. But somehow their trust and safety team was alerted.” He believes that pressure from governments has “scared” companies, but is encouraged by the fact that open source models are “completely free”.

The documentary “Eternal You” suggests that Project December is part of “death capitalism”: companies could charge large sums to not cut off our simulated loved ones. But Rohrer didn’t see much evidence of “some giant industry” of resurrecting loved ones.

To date, Project December has only had 3,383 users and has barely made it any money. “It really missed the mark somehow… It seems like maybe it’s something that’s helping those who are really hurting.”

Microsoft patented a chatbot to imitate the dead, based in part on social media posts, in 2017, but said four years later that it had stopped working on it after seeing “disturbing” results.

Does Rohrer understand that some people fear that we are on the verge of very negative changes? He responds that believing we can direct human civilization is “delusional and misguided”, a form of “social engineering”.

People like to “act as if technological progress has a constant slope. But it really doesn’t. I’m still waiting for those flying cars!” says Rohrer, while smiling.

“A lot of people see where AI is now, they see ChatGPT and even Project December, and they say, if we continue in this direction, we’ll be in this place in the future. The history of AI has shown us that’s never true. Just because you have one big breakthrough doesn’t mean the next big breakthrough is around the corner. There’s no evidence that it won’t just hit a ceiling, essentially, and we’ll plateau on maybe something a little smarter than ChatGPT.”

What about the imminent risk of people spending more time in front of screens, increasing loneliness? “We don’t make laws to prevent people from becoming depressed, do we? Let’s say that horror films are very dangerous because some people are traumatized?”

Some users played his “One Hour One Life” game for “ten hours a day, seven days a week for an entire year,” Rohrer reports.

“When you meet some of these clients, they’re adults living at home, jobless, receiving disability benefits — they’re too depressed to work.” People used it “to destroy themselves, but that doesn’t make me say, ‘I wish I hadn’t,’ because people have had incredible experiences too.”

But what about the impact of AI on society? Isn’t Rohrer concerned, for example, about false messages associated with the Biden or Trump campaign? “I would say this is just a clear case of fraud.”

Rohrer is neither a “tech bro” nor an alarmist. One of his friends refers to him as “the Luddite building the machines”.

He enjoys the fun of technology, believing he can protect himself from risks. This summer, he will bury an object made of $20,000 worth of gold on the East Coast of the US and provide clues for participants to find. It’s just a game.

At the end of our interview, I tell Rohrer that I’ve never met anyone like him. “I’m sure an AI could simulate me very well,” he laughs. “You should have interviewed a simulation of me.”
