Thomas Laqueur, in “Inventing Sex: the body and gender of the Greeks à la Freud” (2001), searches midwives’ manuals from the 17th century and sees the care in explaining how to reach the female orgasm, seen as a necessary condition for conception. The historian shows that the structure and function of the clitoris were already well known since antiquity and the transmission of this knowledge was widespread. Laqueur is against the hypothesis that it was an unknown and enigmatic anatomical piece. The historian takes the opportunity to point out that Freud was responsible for adding a new fact to the concealment of the clitoris.

Since the masterpiece “Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality” of 1905, the inventor of psychoanalysis has proposed that there would be not one, but two types of orgasms: the clitoral and the vaginal. More than that, and with far more serious repercussions, he postulates the theory that the girl’s clitoral pleasure must give way to the woman’s vaginal pleasure. That is, the normal development of women would be in the sense of giving up an organ that is too masculine (the clitoris would be the reduced version of the penis) in favor of a specifically feminine organ (the vagina). Thus the woman would prove to have renounced her infantile identification with masculinity, and the adult couples—married and heterosexual, of course!—would be happily ever after.

From then on, the topic went downhill, giving ammunition to the penis envy theory. Theory that returns every time a woman claims her place in the bread line, in a society that considers her a second-class human being.

Before tap-dancing on Freud’s tomb, let us remember that his theory is the culmination of a long sequence of events that began in modernity and that called female pleasure into question.

When it became convenient to argue that women, who fought alongside men in the French Revolution, were not so equal to them as to deserve to be included in the motto “equality, fraternity and solidarity”, science did not shy away from contributing theories. that made her the other and immeasurable sex.

Why share the booty of the revolution’s conquests with women? The way was to prove “scientifically” that they are opposite and complementary to men in all respects. To begin with, it is hardly known whether they enjoy or even feel any pleasure.
