‘I have no doubt that Bolsonaro tried to carry out a coup’, says Lula to El País – 04/27/2023 – Nelson de Sá

The newspaper highlights, among others, its response to a question about the former president’s responsibility in the “coup-like assault” on January 8: “I have no doubt that he tried to carry out a coup. We are convinced that everything was organized by Bolsonaro and your team”.

Asked to comment on whether “democracy is safe in Brazil”, he said: “Not only in Brazil. We must save democracy throughout the world, because the extreme right also exists in Spain, Portugal, France, Germany… . Spain knows what authoritarianism is”.

Along the same lines, when asked about “respect for human rights in this new international order that he advocates”, with the interviewer specifically citing China, Lula replied:

“We cannot now think that China is to blame for what is happening in the world. The problem is not just China, it is the United States, France, United Kingdom. All countries that form the Security Council must take the initiative to open space. “

In the editorial “Lula in Europe”, in the same edition, the newspaper opines that the trip “ratifies the return of the gigantic country to international multilateralism”. And that “the core of Lula’s speech serves to remind the West that a large part of the so-called Global South does not want to be led to choose sides in the new global order”.
