When inaugurating the Vaccine Museum in Butantan, São Paulo, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) defended vaccines, called Zé Gotinha to the stage and preached the fight against fake news this Tuesday (7).
The attitude differs from the discourse of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, of which Tarcísio was Minister of Infrastructure, and is yet another sign of the “debolsonarization” process of the São Paulo representative.
A national symbol of vaccination campaigns, Zé Gotinha was left aside by Bolsonarists, and Bolsonaro himself even referred to the Coronavac, produced by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac and the Butantan Institute, as “vachina”.
This Tuesday, Tarcísio referred to the character as “the nicest figure in any vaccination campaign”.
“I look forward, I always believed in the vaccine. I vaccinated myself, posted on the networks to set an example, we are encouraging all the actions of the vaccination campaign”, said the governor.
“My desire is to see mothers vaccinating their children, to see the elderly vaccinating themselves. It is to see vaccination coverage increasing, and our population immunized”, added Tarcísio.
In February, he sanctioned a bill —668/2021—that prohibits the requirement to present proof of vaccination against Covid-19 for access to public or private places in any part of the state.

The priority is to raise the levels of vaccination coverage, especially the doses that make up the basic schedule. Among them are immunizations against polio, conjugated meningococcal meningitis, triple viral (measles, mumps and rubella), yellow fever, pentavalent (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and against the bacteria haemophilus influenza type b), hepatitis b and invasive diseases caused by hemophilus b, chickenpox, HPV, BCG (tuberculosis) and Covid-19.
“Unfortunately, since 2015, we are suffering a drop, we were already a reference in the world, with rates above 90%, and we are 70%, 80%”, said the state secretary of Health, Eleuses Paiva,
At Butantan, Eleuses and the municipal secretary of Health of São Paulo, Luiz Carlos Zamarco, both over 60 years old, took the bivalent dose against Covid.
Combat fake news
At the Vaccine Museum, with an area of 550 square meters, the public will be able to visualize the stages of scientific research into a vaccine, learn about the technological platforms, the functioning of the immune system and the immune memory of the human body and the reaction of the vaccinated organism, in addition to of other interactive activities. R$ 13 million were invested in works and exhibitors.
Tarcísio also announced the launch of the Vacina 100 Doubts portal, which brings together the 100 most frequently asked questions and answers about immunization according to internet search engines.
“We are going to eradicate fake news,” said Tarcísio. “It is a fake news eradication campaign, so that everyone has confidence in the vaccine and knows that it is a powerful instrument for risk mitigation and health promotion.”
The governor is also committed to measures that will ensure transparency in the management of the Butantan Foundation. As a private entity, the foundation has refused to provide information about its administration, something that had been questioned since the beginning of the João Doria government.
At the time, the Public Ministry began to investigate purchases of respirators with funds from the institute. The government denies it.
“We are going to adopt in all institutions, whether direct or indirect administration, even foundations governed by private law, transparency mechanisms using information technology. We are going to boost the Transparency Portal, because transparency is the best way to avoid corruption”, he said. Tarcísio.
In November last year, then-Governor Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB) determined that the State Comptroller General investigate possible irregularities in contracts without bidding made by the Butantan Foundation with a software supplier company, SAP Brasil Ltda.
