In partnership with Hospital Sírio Libanês, the project reduced waiting times and increased surgeries

Manaus (AM) – The Hospital e Pronto Socorro (HPS) 28 de Agosto, a unit of the State Health Secretariat (SES-AM), ended this week the 2nd phase of the Lean in Emergencies project, a tool of the Ministry of Health, implemented in partnership with Hospital Sírio-Libanês, from São Paulo. The phase lasted six months and included fortnightly visits by a pair of professionals from the São Paulo hospital, who worked with the HPS 28 team and identified opportunities to implement actions to improve the health unit.

According to the director of HPS 28 de Agosto, Júlia Marques, the unit managed to achieve good results with the improvement and more speed in the varied cases that arrive at the hospital.

“This second phase of Lean in Emergencies came to solidify the first phase and we were able to show excellent data. We reduced numbers in the operating room, increased the number of surgeries, reduced the time between surgeries, increased the number of discharges and reduced the length of stay of patients. We will continue in this routine to present better and better results”, emphasized the director.

Some of the results obtained since the implementation of Lean in Emergencies in the HPS 28 de Agosto were highlighted by the consulting physician of Sírio Libanês, Gutemberg Lavoisier, which result in improvements for patients in general.

“A lot of work from this exceptional group, we achieved a lot like; a reduction in length of stay by 50% of surgical admissions, this corresponds to 2,500 more beds per year. An 80% reduction in unscheduled surgeries, which now has a forecast, that is, more safety, less cancellation, more convenience for people. We achieved a reduction in surgery cancellations in half the time and a reduction in the delay of the first surgery and the time to change the room, which is equivalent to more than five thousand minutes per year. This is not a project for the hospital, it is for the state, for the city, for the community. And these are initial numbers of specific workplaces, in general, we have other gains”, explains Lavoisier.

The results of Lean in Emergencies were evaluated for the first time at the HPS August 28, 2020. The care time for patients without hospitalization, who previously waited 402 minutes (about 6 hours 7 minutes) to be seen, dropped to 91 minutes (about 1 hour and 31 minutes), in addition to the average length of stay in the hospital, which before was 10 days and, after the project, became 3 days.

It also made it possible to review all the hospital’s processes and work with tools such as 5s, which organizes the sectors, observing and eliminating excesses, waste and loss of materials and medicines. In addition, another important tool in the second phase was the Kamishibai, which increases bed turnover, allowing the unit to work faster, allowing the team to be able to attend to patients in the Emergency Room and the Surgical Center more quickly.
