Last week, reports of Brazilian students without visas being barred from Argentine airports as “fake tourists” generated alarm and indicated a possible tightening of the application of rules by immigration authorities under Javier Milei’s administration.
Although this has not translated into a significant increase in denied entries — 38 out of 1 million travelers have been denied since January, according to the government —, the cases have raised doubts about the documents that Brazilians need to live in the neighboring country.
Local laws and Mercosur agreements allow tourists from the bloc to enter and stay in Argentina for up to 90 days, extendable for another 90, without a visa or even a passport. Those who intend to live, study or work in the country must apply for the corresponding visa, presenting the requested documents.
A 2009 bilateral agreement, however, allows Brazilians and Argentines who are irregularly in the other country to regularize their situation there, which has generated a culture in which Brazilians enter the country as “fake tourists and, once there, ask for the right to the residence.

How to obtain a visa to enter Argentina

Temporary visa by nationality

Residence by nationality
