Valdemar Costa Neto, president of Jair Bolsonaro’s party, declared that “everyone” had at home documents such as the draft of the coup found in the residence of former Minister Anderson Torres (Justice).

With his testimony, the president of the PL made it clear that the coup mobilization involved many more people in the last government besides Bolsonaro and Torres. Authorities should investigate who Valdemar’s “everybody” was.

For these and other reasons, allies are already beginning to wonder if his proximity to Bolsonaro is not making Valdemar toxic.

Everyone in the PL supports 20 or 30 Bolsonarists lying about the vaccine if it makes them more money from the party fund. However, if Bolsonaristas become a police decoy, things will change: many people there, like Valdemar himself, have already had difficult experiences with the forces of law.

And the allegations against Bolsonaristas have barely begun. It is no wonder that this group wanted the coup so much: as soon as they lost the power to distribute funds and public positions, the armor that protected them evaporated.

Take, for example, the case of elected senator Damares Alves.

Wellington Macedo de Souza, one of the terrorists who tried to blow up a truck at Brasília airport on Christmas Eve —come on, read that sentence again, read it aloud— worked with an adviser in his ministry.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Damares asked Bolsonaro to veto sending drinking water to the Yanomami — again, come on, read it again, read it aloud — the indigenous tribe that ended the debate on whether to call Jair Bolsonaro of genocide.

That is, Damares will begin her term suspected of having covered up terrorism and promoted genocide, under orders from a president who loves to blame women.

The average corrupt PL would easily steal 10% of the Yanomami’s water and sell an overpriced bomb to the terrorist at the airport, but he doesn’t want to be in a photo that could end up in the International Court of The Hague.

Damares is not, by far, the only Bolsonarista in the PL in bad shape. Deputies such as André Fernandes (PL-CE) and Silvia Waiãpi (PL-AP) are already being investigated by the Attorney General’s Office for encouraging the Bolsonarista Intent on the 8th.

But it is not just the PL that is having difficulty transforming the coup into “normal” political capital.

Recently, the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, lied that the Lula government let Intentona Bolsonarista happen to profit politically from it.

Zema is considering leaving the New Party, but he belongs to that faction of the party that didn’t join the coup because Mom wouldn’t let him leave without a coat.

By lying about such a serious matter, the Minas Gerais governor made it clear that he wants to lead the post-Bolsonaro right, but accepts leading it the way it is; he lacks the courage to lead it back to democracy.

Both the PL and politicians like Zema are trying to use the electoral assets of the coup to win votes and funds within normal institutional politics. But if the law is applied and the institutions are back up and running, both may find that they have the political equivalent of Lojas Americanas debt in their hands.
