Holy Week: Pirarucu Fair will sell 10 tons of fish in Manaus

Manaus (AM) — The first edition of the year of the traditional Pirarucu Fair takes place this Saturday (23), until next Tuesday (26), promoted by managers of the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (RDS), in the middle Solimões region, in the interior of Amazonas . In total, 10 tons of sustainably managed pirarucu will be sold.

The fair takes place at the headquarters of the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS), located at Rua Álvaro Braga, 351, Parque Dez de Novembro, and is one of the actions of the Pirarucu Manejado 2024 Production Chain project, a partnership between FAS and Bradesco. The project aims to strengthen the pirarucu production chain with production infrastructure in conservation units where FAS operates.

FAS will offer the sale of fish from 7 am to 3 pm or while supplies last, and may close before the scheduled time and dates.

The price of pirarucu varies depending on the piece. The carcass will be sold for R$5 (kilo), the head for R$10 (unit), the belly for R$15 (kilo), the blanket for R$21 (kilo) and the fillet for R$30 (kilo) .

The sale of the fish will directly benefit 19 families from the Jussara community, located in the municipality of Juruá (more than 2,225 km from Manaus), who work with the sustainable management of pirarucu through the fishing agreement in the Macopani sector, located around the RDS Mamirauá.

According to the manager of the FAS Prosperity in the Forest Program and coordinator of the Pirarucu Fair, Edvaldo Côrrea, the event is important to guarantee income generation for managing families and value sustainable economic activities.

“Through the fair, handlers have the opportunity to sell their product directly to the consumer at a fair price, guaranteeing the generation of direct and immediate income for dozens of families who make a living from handling. Furthermore, it is a way of publicizing the importance and valuing this sustainable economic activity, which generates a healthy, quality product that contributes to forest conservation. It will also be an opportunity to guarantee tasty fish for the Easter holiday, a time when demand increases”,

The Pirarucu Fair is promoted by the Association of Residents and Users of RDS Mamirauá Antônio Martins (Amurman), with support from FAS, responsible for infrastructure, transport, logistics and publicity. In addition to Bradesco, the sale of managed pirarucu and tambaqui also has support from the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), the State Secretariat for the Environment of Amazonas (Sema) and the State Secretariat for Rural Production (Sepror).
