HIV prevention action is carried out for LGBTQIAPN+ inmates of the AM prison system

The event marked the beginning of the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PREP) and post-exposure risk to virus infection (PEP) medications for people deprived of their liberty.

Manaus (AM) – The inmates of the Amazonas penitentiary system, who are part of the LGBTQIAPN+ community, received medication and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PREP) and post-exposure risk for HIV infection (PEP), this Tuesday (20), with the aim of ensure the prison population’s access to combined prevention measures, which were already available to the general population.

The action was carried out by the Department of Penitentiary Administration of the State of Amazonas (Seap), in partnership with the State Department of Health (SES), Municipal Department of Health (SEMSA), Amazonas Health Surveillance Foundation (FVS), with the Amazonas Prison and Socio-educational System Monitoring and Inspection Group (GMF/TJAM).

The action is a milestone for the State’s prison system and represents an integration between several sectors, including State secretariats, the judiciary, civil society organizations and other partners dedicated to promoting the health and dignity of those deprived of liberty.

The ceremony was attended by the Secretary of State for Penitentiary Administration, Colonel Paulo César, the Director-President of FVS-AM, Tatyana Amorim, the coordinator of the Prison Service Center (NAP), public defender Theo Eduardo Costa, the Judge of Law of the Court of Justice of Amazonas, Saulo Góes Pinto, the state coordinator of the Making Justice Program of the National Justice Council, Dr. Luanna Marley, and representatives of the municipal health department and the Association of transvestites, transsexuals and transgender people of the state of Amazonas (Assotram ).

“We are in prison units every day fulfilling the mission of the State government, which is to bring dignity to people deprived of their liberty. Today’s action is a milestone for the Amazonas penitentiary system, the result of integrated work with partner bodies, which aims not only to promote health, but to offer education and professional qualifications to the LGBTQIAPN+ public, declared the Secretary of State of Penitentiary Administration, Colonel Paulo César.

“This is a time for progress and confrontation against HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections. The Health Surveillance Foundation continues to support the strengthening of prevention and early identification, which is extremely important so that we can reduce the incidence of cases and the number of advanced AIDS. And this is yet another strategy to bring health closer to the public of interest, such as those deprived of liberty”, added the director-president of FVS-RCP, Tatyana Amorim.

PrEP and PEP

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) are preventive strategies used in the context of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Both aim to reduce the risk of HIV infection, but are applied at different times.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

PrEP involves the regular use of antiretroviral medications by people who do not have HIV but who are at higher risk of being exposed to the virus.

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)

PEP is an emergency intervention that involves the use of antiretroviral medications after possible exposure to HIV.
