Heat: São Paulo had the hottest September ever measured – 10/02/2023 – Daily

Last month was the hottest September in the city of São Paulo since 1943, when Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) began taking measurements at the Santana meteorological station, in the north of the municipality.

The average maximum temperature was 30.2°C, around 5°C above the climatological normal — the standard values ​​obtained from the average of previous years — for the month, which is 25.2°C, points out the body linked to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

The highest mark of the month was recorded on the 24th, when thermometers reached 36.5°C, the highest temperature of the year. It was also the highest value ever recorded in September in history.

The last months of July and August had already been the hottest since measurements began.

It does not stop there. The winter in the capital of São Paulo was the warmest in the last 62 years, according to Inmet, with an average temperature of 26°C. São Paulo was not the only one. Survey of Sheet showed that 40% of Brazilian capitals had the hottest winter in history.

According to the analysis of Sheet, in 2023, these cities had temperatures 0.5°C to 3.4°C higher than in the first decade of the century. Not all cities recorded record heat in winter, but absolutely all the capitals analyzed warmed compared to the average for the decade from 2001 to 2010.

Finally, the world had the hottest August ever recorded in history, in the 174 years of record by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa). The global average surface temperature of the planet was 1.25°C higher than the 20th century average for the month of August.

In São Paulo, the average minimum temperature was 18.1°C, also the highest value for the month, according to the institute. According to Inmet records, the climatological normal for the month’s minimum is 14.9 °C. Thus, the deviation was 3.2 °C above the climatological normal.

On the 1st, the lowest temperature of the month was recorded, at 12.6 °C.

Inmet also draws attention to the minimum of 23.6°C reached on the 19th of last month, which was the highest minimum of the year so far. According to the institute, this could be the highest minimum for the month of September since 1961.

The 16th, in turn, had the highest temperature range of the month, with a variation of 17°C (with a minimum of 12.9°C and a maximum of 29.9°C).

It got warmer and it rained less. According to the balance released on Monday afternoon (2), the institute says that the Santana meteorological station recorded the volume of precipitation accumulated in September was 77.6 mm.

The value is around 10 mm below the average of 88.3 mm. Even so, he says, it is within normal limits.

The highest volume of rain in 24 hours was 29.4 mm, totaled on the morning of the 28th.

According to the CGE (Climate Emergency Management Center) of the city of São Paulo, which has values ​​slightly different from those presented by Inmet, most of the precipitation (around 73% of the rain) was concentrated on three days last month.

If September ended with less rain than normal, October began with cloudy skies and flooding in the city of São Paulo.

Inmet states that at the end of Saturday night (30) an accumulation of 15.6 millimeters (mm) was recorded. And between 3am and 4am this Sunday (1st), 25.6 mm.

According to the institute, a humid and unstable air mass predominated over São Paulo. Furthermore, the advancement of some short wave troughs (elongated areas of low pressure) in the middle levels of the atmosphere increased instability.

According to the CGE, 107.8 mm of rain are expected for the month of October. The CGE points out that, in the first two days of October, accumulated precipitation is just over 40% of what was expected for the entire month.

From Wednesday (4) until Friday (6), Inmet points out that the city should have isolated rain showers. The maximum expected for Wednesday is 30°C and the minimum expected for Thursday and Friday is 16°C.
