Haddad says tax waiver proposals could cost R$32 billion

This Tuesday (16), after leaving a meeting with the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, and the leader of the government in the Chamber, José Guimarães (PT-CE), the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said that the tax waiver proposals being discussed in Congress could cost R$32 billion to public coffers.

“I always try to clarify the values ​​that are involved. The PEC of R$ 16 billion, the waiver of the payroll which is more R$ 12 [bilhões], the benefit to municipalities is R$4 billion. So, all in all, we are talking about R$32 billion that is not foreseen in the budget”, stated Haddad.

“The role of the economic team is to put things in place for the economy to function well. Obviously, we are talking to all interested parties, but, above all, thinking about Brazil as a whole. I cannot harm the entire Brazilian society to favor one sector. I have to find a balance”, added the minister.

Haddad also denied any tension between the government and Congress.

“There is no tension between the powers. The Treasury negotiated complex, difficult projects, which no one even believed in their possible approval, and we are discussing them. We have no problem discussing it”, he guaranteed.

On Monday (16), Haddad met with the president of Congress, senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), to discuss the fate of the Provisional Measure (MP 1202/2023) which reinstates the payroll of 17 economic sectors .

After almost three hours of meeting, the two decided that the government’s Provisional Measure on payroll relief for the sectors that employ the most should be revoked.

This Wednesday (17), Haddad should meet with President Lula (PT) to discuss the economic agenda.
