Minister Fernando Haddad (Finance) said he sees the risk of a new attack similar to the one on January 8 in Brasilia, but said that this is not a reason to worry about Brazilian democracy.
Haddad is in Davos, Switzerland, where he is participating in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. The attacks on the 8th increased questions to the minister about the risks to democracy in the country.
“I believe that there is a possibility of surprises there, because they are cells that are organized very quickly and with a principle established by the ex-president’s narrative [Jair Bolsonaro]which aroused irreconcilable passions with democracy,” he said.
He added, however, that “it is not another type of institutional confrontation” when compared to the invasion of the Capitol, seat of the United States Congress, on the day of the inauguration of Democrat Joe Biden, on January 6, 2021.
The minister says that the message passed by him and his colleague Marina Silva (Meia Environment) has mitigated the doubts of authorities and foreign investors, especially due to the demonstration of unity between the Powers — this assessment is corroborated by Forum participants heard by the report.
“I think what Brazil demonstrated in that attack was that the institutions came together.”
