“Only those people know the value of that standing forest”, says minister

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, defended this Tuesday (10) the demarcations of indigenous lands to preserve the Amazon forest. “We cannot preserve the forest without demarcation. The only way to preserve the Amazon is demarcation”, he emphasized when participating in a debate at Sesc on Avenida Paulista, in the central region of the capital.

The minister shared the table, in a philosophical discussion, with British archaeologist David Wengrow.

When talking about the importance of demarcating the territories of traditional peoples, Haddad stated that it is these populations that have historically maintained the forest. “If you overlay the maps of what is demarcated and what is protected, they overlap. What protects is the demarcation, because only those people know the value of that standing forest.”he added.

The minister added that ensuring the preservation of natural heritage is one of Brazil’s great roles on the international stage. “As far as Brazilians are concerned, our main challenge in the ecological transition is to keep that heritage standing. The biggest cause of emissions are fires in the Amazon. We have a humanitarian commitment to this task”, he highlighted.

Haddad leaves this Tuesday for Marrakesh, Morocco, where he will represent Brazil at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Until Saturday, the minister is expected to participate in bilateral agendas and preparatory meetings for the organization of the next G20 meeting, which will be hosted in Brazil in 2024.
