The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, admitted this Thursday (31) that the government may have “difficulty” in meeting the goal of zeroing the primary deficit in 2024. However, he stressed that the economic team is committed to rebalancing the public Accounts.

“We are not denying the challenge. We are not denying the difficulty. What we are affirming is our commitment from the economic area to obtaining the best possible result, obviously taking into account the opinion of the National Congress, which has the last word on this topic”, said Haddad, in a press conference alongside by the Minister of Planning, Simone Tebet, informed the Brazil Agency.

This Wednesday (30), Tebet had already anticipated that the budget proposal for 2024 provides for R$ 129 billion more in total expenses, compared to this year. The minister said this afternoon that of the R$ 129 billion, around R$ 124 billion will actually be with the Union and the rest should be shared with states and municipalities.

During the interview, the Minister of Finance recognized that raising revenue is another challenge for parliament. “These are not easy measures for Congress to deliberate… I trust the economic team, I do not deny the challenge, but I think that if we commit ourselves to consistent results, we will obtain better economic results”, said Haddad

The minister also stated that he spoke by telephone this Thursday with the mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), about the economic agenda. “The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Planning are at the disposal of the Houses, both the Senate and the Chamber to face this agenda, including waste, registration fraud”, he said.
