Behind the scenes, anonymous people work hard on creation: they dub, edit, interact and make money from it. g1 spoke to two of them, one from Ceará and the other from Salvador — the origin of the meme is foreign, but other people “adopted” the model and started circulating their own versions. And be committed to fulfilling the “orders”: “Do Irineu, please”, cries one person on TikTok. “It’s been very successful and I can’t manage to say everyone’s name. Sometimes, people get upset because I didn’t say their name. But it’s normal. You can’t do it with everyone”, says Michael Mendes, from Fortaleza, which creates versions of the meme. What explains the success of the trend Mendes is the owner of “Marmota na Voz”, which has more than 1 million followers on Instagram. He says he is very connected to social media and, in July, he came across foreign profiles producing content featuring the animal. Mendes then created a profile to make memes and claims to be the creator of the Brazilian version of the screaming groundhog. “In July, a week passed after the first post and nothing happened. Then, it started going viral and gaining followers. I hit 1 million followers on Instagram in 10 days.” Now, there are several accounts, both on Instagram and TikTok. At his house, Michael even has a board with the names, to organize the production (see the image below). For him, the videos have been successful because people identify with and have fun with the voices. “They also share or tag acquaintances with their name. He saw that the social network’s algorithm started to indicate several groundhog videos. “I thought that was funny and I started producing. I’m not a voice actor, but I have skills with it. I know how to imitate Mickey Mouse and SpongeBob very well, for example. So I thought: ‘I’m going to take this video and I’m going to put the my voice'”, he tells g1. “I soon gained 10 thousand followers and was able to monetize the account. In August, I made more money than I earn as a commercial manager”, he says. “In 20 days, it changed my life.” Vinicius did not authorize the disclosure of values ​​in this report. The “Marmota Problemática” account, with 600 thousand followers, was created at the end of July, but Lacerda only posted the first video in August, under the name “João” — the post has 2 million views. But other videos he made with the meme yielded even more: the groundhog shouting “Júlia” has 8 million views, “Sister” 12 million and “Mother” 17 million.
