Newly graduated, young Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg announced this Friday (9) that she will end her school strike after finishing high school in her country.
“I finished secondary school, which means I can no longer do the school climate strike. This is my last (school strike),” the 20-year-old Swede said on Twitter.
Now, the founder of the “Fridays for Future” movement hopes to engage in other forms of protest.
“I will continue to protest on Fridays even though technically it’s not a school strike,” she said.
Unknown to all, Greta Thunberg was just 15 years old when she sat for the first time outside the Swedish Parliament on a Friday in August 2018 with a banner that read “School strike for climate”.
In a few months, from Berlin (ALE) to Sydney (AUS) and from San Francisco (USA) to Johannesburg (AFS), other young people followed in their footsteps. Thus was born the “Fridays for Future” movement.
“When I started to strike in 2018, I never imagined that it would cause this impact,” said the militant this Friday.
“In 2019, millions of young people” did not attend school on Fridays “because of the weather” and “flooded the streets in more than 180 countries”, he highlighted.
