Manaus (AM) – As of this Monday (17th), enrollment is open for AdaptaJuv – advocacy, adaptation and youth for the climate, a project that will train young people from Manaus, Recife and São Paulo to act as activists in favor of public policies for adapting to climate change. climate changes. The application period for AdaptaJuv will close on July 31st.

Organizations or collectives that already develop social actions for climate justice, against environmental racism and that are interested in influencing the climate agenda of the municipalities can participate. Entries can be made here.

The Greenpeace initiative is carried out in partnership with the organization Clima de Eleição, which promotes the importance of the climate agenda for the young Brazilian population. The program aims to empower groups that already act on the agenda, especially in peripheral territories, drawing the attention of young people to the importance of the fight for climate adaptation.

With 135 places, the program will have online classes from August to November, and will provide 30 connectivity grants of R$ 100.00 for those who need support with internet access costs. The class period will last approximately 30 days – then, three organizations from each territory will be selected for the second phase of the program. They will receive financial support to develop advocacy campaigns, as an incentive to organize workshops in the territory, in addition to communication and local political advocacy putting pressure on public authorities.

Greenpeace pushes for policies that protect the population

With more than 4 million Brazilian men and women living in risk areas, exposed to extreme events that threaten their lives on a daily basis, it is urgent to implement permanent public policies that respond to the consequences of the climate crisis, promoting decent housing conditions and citizenship.

The National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (PNA), elaborated in 2016 on the spur of the moment and currently outdated (its deadline expired in 2020), does not consider the outskirts of cities as sensitive territories. Greenpeace Brasil defends the urgent renewal of the PNA, with broad participation by civil society and the elaboration of measures that promote climate justice, protecting the parts of the population that are most exposed to risks.

“How many more deaths do we need to count for public policies to face the climate crisis to become a priority for the public power?”,

says Rodrigo Jesus, spokesperson for Greenpeace Brazil.

The organization invites the population to participate in the petition calling for the revision of the PNA and demanding measures from the authorities to prevent tragedies resulting from extreme weather events.
