The ports of the so-called Arco Norte handled 17 million tons of soybeans and corn in the first four months of this year, a volume 32% higher than in the first four months of last year.

The increase in port terminals and the improvement of logistics make the movement of these ports grow year by year. In the first four months, 38% of the 33.4 million tons of soy exported by the country left through the Arco Norte ports. Ten years ago, the percentage was only 17%.

Corn output totaled 4 million tons, 40% of the total exported by the country, according to IMEA (Mato-Grossense Institute of Agricultural Economics), which used data from Secex (Secretary of Foreign Trade) as a basis for this calculation.

Ten years ago, corn exports from Arco Norte ports accounted for 3% of total exports. The participation of this region should be even greater in the second half, when cereal exports increase.

For Thiago Guilherme Péra, coordinator of the Esalq-Log group at USP, some factors favor grain exports through Arco Norte. For him, the improvement of road conditions and the expansion of port capacity are among these factors.

It is also important, in Péra’s opinion, to increase the volumes handled in the region, allowing the means of transport to return with loads. A greater movement of fertilizers, for example, is a way out, according to him.

The acceleration of business through Arco Norte will also come with the creation of new railroads, such as Ferrogrão, and with rail authorization projects. The depth of some port terminals, allowing the use of larger ships, will also generate the effect of economies of scale in maritime transport.

Some factors, however, may encourage the output of grains through Arco Sul. Among them, the increase in port capacity in Santos and the improvement of road conditions in the corridor to the South. Péra also highlights as favorable factors the expansion of Malha Norte to the central region of Mato Grosso, toll collection on the BR-163 highway (MT/PA) and the expansion of rail capacity from Mato Grosso to Santos.

Calculations made by the coordinator indicate that 57% of grain production in Mato Grosso, the largest national producer, is still in a gray area. That is, you can either go North or South, depending on the definition of logistical conditions. Still according to his calculations, 19% of production is already directed to the North and 24% to the South.

This year’s soybean exports amount to 33.4 million tons, with revenues of US$ 18.4 billion. Mato Grosso, with a total of 12.4 million tons, leads foreign sales among the 22 exporting states.

Foreign corn sales reached 10.3 million tons and went to 83 different destinations. With an average value of US$ 294.6 thousand per ton, revenues add up to US$ 2.98 billion. Mato Grosso leads exports, handling 4.3 million tons. Paraná comes next, with 1.4 million.

Chicken Exports in the first four months reached 1.75 million tons, 12% more than in the same period of 2022. In the same period, revenues rose to US$ 3.41 billion, with an increase of 19%, according to ABPA (Brazilian Association of Animal Protein).

chicken 2 After several weeks of decline, chicken prices have returned to a slight increase for consumers in São Paulo, according to data released by Fipe (Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas) this Tuesday (9). In the year, the drop is 9.7%, but the accumulated evolution in 12 months reaches 29%.
