The governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima (União Brasil), declared this Wednesday (29) that he intends to meet representatives of the company Amazon to discuss a partnership, given that it “uses the name of the Amazon”.
Lima intends to do so at COP28 (28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change), which began this Thursday (30) and runs until December 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The statement was made live on TV Globo’s JAM1 newspaper.
“We are going to have a meeting with Amazon, which is a big company owned by Jeff Bezos [presidente e CEO da empresa], with the aim of closing a partnership. Amazon uses the name Amazonas. Uses the name of the Amazon. How much do we get for this? We want to know. This is one of the questions we will ask at the COP”, said the governor.
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the name of the company Amazon was chosen by businessman Jeff Bezos in 1994 in reference to the Amazon River, due to its vastness and the brand intended to be an “everything store”. The fact that it starts with the first letter of the alphabet would also have weighed heavily on choosing the name.
Books on the company’s history also indicate that other names were considered, such as “Cadabra”, a reference to “abracadabra”, but which was discarded because it sounded too similar to “corpse”, and “Relentless” which means “relentless”. To this day, relentless.com links to Amazon.
According to the Amazonas Environment Secretariat, the governor embarked on Wednesday afternoon for the United Arab Emirates and has agendas at the COP starting on Saturday (2). The government confirmed that Lima should meet with company representatives in Dubai, but was unable to specify the date.
According to Itamaraty, Brazil’s priority at the conference is to present a proposal for a global fund for forest conservation along the same lines as the Amazon Fund. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is already at the event.
