The governor of Amapá, Clécio Luís, delivered this Saturday, the 14th, another 460 food kits to rural producers in the municipality of Oiapoque, in the extreme north of the state. The initiative is part of the humanitarian aid organized by the Government to serve communities, including indigenous ones, that depend on cassava agriculture, which has been affected by fungi and bacteria in the region.

The phytosanitary crisis in cassava production was declared in July of this year, and since then, the Government of Amapá has been adopting measures to alleviate the losses and guarantee food security for producers. In August, more than 60 tons of food began to be distributed to indigenous peoples. There are 66 villages affected by the crisis, with an estimated population of around 10 thousand indigenous people.
Cassava is the basis of the diet of the people of the Oiapoque region. Studies have identified that pests affect all planting areas and impact almost all flour production.

The action in Oiapoque took place at the Joaquim Caetano State School and was coordinated by the Mandioculture Working Group. The delivery of baskets is guaranteed by decree nº 6621, which defines the emergency situation.

“We are assisting these families on an emergency basis, due to the problem in cassava farming. Now we also need to be aware of the other demands of rural producers, hence our effort to create alternatives. We continue to dialogue with various state and federal bodies, so that together we can seek the best alternative for the primary sector”, highlighted governor Clécio Luís.

For the president of the Association of Rural Producers of Rio Pantanary (Aparry), Pedro Xavier, food aid is fundamental for the well-being of the community, and shows commitment to farmers.

“We are having difficulties at the moment, but we are receiving this basket that will help and we hope to soon be able to plant cassava again”, said the president.
With the emergency decree in force, the State has already transferred around 2,400 food kits to family farmers, involving indigenous people in Oiapoque.

“The State Government’s efforts are to mitigate the impacts caused by pests on plantations; in addition to the more specific work of other bodies”, said the Secretary of Social Assistance, Aline Gurgel.

With assistance work in the coming days, another shipment of kits will be delivered, this time, once again serving the indigenous people of Oiapoque.
