Guaranteeing the right to release studies on the exploration of oil and natural gas on the coast of Amapá was one of the agendas defended by governor Clécio Luís during the debate on the “Pathways for Fair Energy Transition in Brazil”, which took place on Wednesday, 11, in Rio de Janeiro.

The event, with different themes about the country’s energy matrix, was promoted by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) in partnership with Petrobras.

In his participation at the meeting, during the panel “Opportunities and Challenges for Brazil in the Exploration of the Equatorial Margin”, governor Clécio Luís reiterated the state’s right to carry out research into potential oil production.

“When you look at environmental indicators, Amapá comes first in everything. It is the most protected, but this does not translate into development and quality of life for the inhabitants. So, when we see the possibility of having a new economic matrix, we imagine that it will be a great discovery, but they are not even allowing us to research whether or not our coast has oil and gas. We want to have that right. We saw that exploration, then oil production, can change people’s reality, generating jobs, income, and activating other economic activities. We want to bring social indicators closer to our best environmental indicators”emphasized the governor.

In the morning, the first panel dealt with the importance of oil and gas for a fair energy transition. The debate brought together the vice-president of Brazil and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, and the presidents of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, and Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates.

Concern about climate change was effectively highlighted, with counter-proposals being the search for increasingly cleaner energy, through renewable sources, or even oil production, with greater efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

BNDES and Petrobras believe that resources from the exploration of the equatorial margin of the Brazilian coast are necessary to finance investments in the transition to renewable energy.

During the seminar, the president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, said that the expectation is that the license to drill a well in search of oil in the Amazon basin will be issued in the first half of 2024. “We have every expectation that, in the first half of next year, or later throughout the year, we will head to Amapá”highlighted the president.
