Governor announces R$ 8 million package to encourage athletes in Amazonas

Manaus (AM) – Governor Wilson Lima announced, this Friday (3), an investment package in the sports area totaling R$ 8.4 million to encourage athletes and the performance of sports by children and young people. The planning includes the launch of the Forming Champions and Amazonas projects at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with immediate support to 14 pre-Olympic athletes from Amazonas.

“We are very optimistic, and as of today the State is assuming the responsibility with these athletes of having an exclusive team for the preparation for the Olympics (in Paris), including a scholarship. We are hiring these athletes and they will stay here at Vila Olímpica receiving this training and all this guidance, together with their coaches, so that they can qualify for the Olympics”, announced Governor Wilson Lima.

On that occasion, the governor of Amazonas announced the payment of those contemplated in the scholarship Bolsa Sport 2022. Also part of the package is the expansion of the Sport and Leisure Program in the Capital and Interior, the +Pelci. The announcement of the investments, which will be carried out by the Amazonas de Alto Redimento Foundation (Faar), took place in the Vila Olímpica, in the central-west zone of Manaus, which also received a new sand court for footvolley practice.

“Our governor Wilson Lima is the governor of sport. We started this management with an investment of more or less R$ 200 million in the last four years in the sport in the state of Amazonas. So, these fruits of the base and these investments of the high Olympic performance, and soon also investments in the state’s soccer clubs, all of this puts Amazonas on another level regarding the systematics of the national sport”, said Jorge Oliveira, the director- president of Faar.

Present at the announcement, in addition to Governor Wilson Lima and the CEO of Faar, Jorge Oliveira, were councilors Alan Campêlo, Diego Afonso, Glória Carrate, Márcio Tavares and Sassá, representing the City Council of Manaus (CMM); state deputies João Luiz, Rozenha, Mário César Filho, Daniel Almeida and Roberto Cidade, president of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Amazonas (Aleam), in addition to other representatives of sports institutions and the interior of the state and athletes.

Amazons at the Paris Olympics

Initially, 14 athletes with pre-Olympic indexes will receive incentives from the Government of Amazonas so that they can prepare to represent the state in the Paris 2024 Olympics, in the modalities westling, dice throw, shot put, 3×3 basketball, archery and swimming. The aim is to enable training and preparation conditions for athletes to become fit for competitions.

On his way to the Paris 2024 Olympics, Pedro Nunes was introduced to athletics at the age of 11, inspired by his uncle, who was an athlete in the sport. Starting out in sports at speed events, Pedro found his passion in javelin throwing, and today, aged 23, he collects national and international titles, such as the Junior Pan American Games 2021, the Ibero-American Adult 2022, where he won a silver, and the youth world in Finland, where he took 5th place.

“We are seeing that Amazonas is investing in the sport, and that brings confidence to compete. Paris 2023 has become something closer due to the investment that the State is making. Up ahead, we’re going to bring this result and this Olympic vacancy”, said Pedro Nunes, considered the main athlete in the state in the modality and in the Brazilian and South American athletics ranking.

Sports Scholarship

Wilson Lima started paying the 2022 State Sports Scholarship, which aims to contribute to training more Amazonian athletes on the national and international scene. 89 athletes will be contemplated, from the base, para-athletes, high-performance and high-performance Olympic athletes. The new notice – Bolsa Sport 2023 – should be launched this semester.

Another new project announced, Forming Champions, aims to support the training of more than 500 young people from different areas of the capital with potential competition through the inclusion of children and adolescents in the practice of sport, in the form of martial arts, helping to physical, psychological and social development.

+Pelci

+Pelci now reaches 15,000 young people and children throughout Amazonas. There are 5,000 more, in addition to the 10,000 already served through the More Footvolley in the Neighborhoods, Escolinhas in the Neighborhoods and Champions of the Village projects that are part of +Pelci. During the announcement of investments, the governor inaugurated the sand court of the Vila Olímpica de Manaus, especially for the implementation of the More Footvolley in the Neighborhoods project.

In just one year of existence, +Pelci, with the expansion, becomes the largest socio-sports project in Brazil. Currently, the program serves 35 centers in the capital and six centers in the countryside in the municipalities of Tabatinga, São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Humaitá, Codajás, Envira and Fonte Boa.

Registration starts on March 6th for re-enrollment of students who are already part of the projects and for new students registration starts on the 13th.

In the Champions of the Village project alone, there will be 1,200 new vacancies for students from 8 to 17 years old, in activities such as athletics, basketball, futsal, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, handball, judo, table tennis, volleyball and chess. This year’s novelty is for athletes who are interested in joining the modalities of swimming (advanced), indoor karting and archery.
