Ten days after the January 8 attacks, Lula said that the idea of ​​creating a CPI to investigate the attempted coup was a failure. The accelerated investigations at the Supreme Court and the risk that the commission would get out of control made the president discourage a congressional investigation. “We don’t need that,” said the petista.

The government and its allies began to see the CPI as a source of wasted energy, not as an opportunity to delve into the details of the coup acts. The commission’s lukewarm start reflects that choice.

The governing group skidded on the testimony of Silvinei Vasques, former director of the PRF. He spent too much time exposing the deponent’s obvious affinity with Jair Bolsonaro and took too long to hammer out evidence of political direction in the corporation’s blitzes in the second round.

The former director used well-known tools and managed to escape the squeeze: he distorted data, avoided uncomfortable questions and was favored by the turmoil produced by Bolsonarist parliamentarians.

Lula’s allies occupied most of the CPI seats with the intention of controlling the pace of the commission, keeping the Bolsonarist coup in evidence and preventing the opposition from using loopholes to wear down the government. In other words, the main objectives were to protect the government and comply with the table.

The parliamentarians of that majority have not yet shown interest or planning to carry out an investigation that exposes new details about the use of the Bolsonarist machine and the fingerprints of politicians and financiers in the coup acts. So far, everything indicates that the CPI will be in the tow of the STF.

The government supporters will need to make an additional effort because the commission did not repeat the Covid CPI double, with Omar Aziz in the presidency and Renan Calheiros in the rapporteurship. The president of the CPI on January 8th is Arthur Maia, who is closer to Bolsonaro than to Lula and played the role of lobbying for the summoning of Gonçalves Dias, the PT’s former minister.
