Government reserves BRL 37.6 billion for parliamentary amendments in the 2024 Budget

The federal government reserved BRL 37.6 billion for parliamentary amendments in the 2024 Budget proposal sent this Thursday (31) to the National Congress. For this year, the planned amendments add up to R$ 36.3 billion, after the distribution of secret budget values, a device that was overthrown and transformed, in part, into amendments.

Deputies and senators can define where the resources of individual and bench amendments will be used. Normally, they are intended for works and projects in the parliamentarians’ home states. However, it is the government that dictates the pace of distribution of values. This method is used, for example, as a form of negotiation during the voting on priority projects in Congress.

As for the electoral fund, formed by public resources destined to the campaigns, R$ 939 million were reserved. In 2022, the amount allocated to the electoral fund was R$ 4.9 billion.
