This Wednesday (17), the federal government, through the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI), reached an agreement with representatives of federal criminal police officers in which it committed to regulating the career and readjusting the salary of category by more than 60%.

With the adjustment, the salary of some of the 1,600 agents who work in the country’s five federal penitentiaries will increase from R$13,000 to R$20,000.

“It was necessary to establish a remuneration table that did justice to the specific work they perform. They have the responsibility of working in maximum security prisons of the federal government, which means that inmates are highly dangerous and this represents a danger to the category when dealing with the pressure of containing organized crime”, said the Secretary of Labor Relations , José Lopez Feijóo.

The agreement was reached after five meetings between the government and representatives of the category. On Tuesday (17), the National Federation of Federal Criminal Police (FENAPPF) highlighted the agents’ dissatisfaction with the Lula government and complained about the lack of appreciation.

Wanted by People’s Gazettethe president of FENAPPF, Gentil Nei Silva, said that the MGI was resistant to the demand for career regulation and a change in the education criteria required for entry into the profession.

With the agreement, future competitions for federal criminal police officers will require higher education. The guidelines agreed at this Wednesday’s meeting (17) will still be sent in the form of a bill to the National Congress.

“In 2003, when the career was created, the level of entry into almost all police forces was average. The PF (Federal Police) was the only one that required a higher education level, but the PRF (Federal Highway Police) and the civil police only required a secondary level. In 2003, we had less than 5% of the Brazilian population with a degree. So, when it (the federal criminal police) was created with only a secondary level requirement, it was created within normality. But everything changed. We now have an organic Civil Police law sanctioned by Lula that created the position of investigating officer at a higher level, that is, entry to any civil police force in Brazil will now be at a higher level. Then came the organic law of the Military Police requiring entry into higher education for recruits or the recruit’s training course, which in the end offers a higher education diploma. So, this average level of education for the police, for a police career, is a new era, a thing of the past. Brazilian society has changed and institutions have to keep up with these changes and the MGI did not understand this”, the Federation president told Gazeta.

According to a statement from the MGI, “the constitutional status of the Federal Criminal Police, the change in the position’s education requirement and the improvement of the category’s remuneration structure add greater qualifications to the new career, which will need to increasingly attract professionals qualified to deal with the challenges of federal penal establishments”.
