Government plans to ban the participation of managers and athletes in the betting market

The government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) prepares a Provisional Measure (MP) to prohibit athletes from placing bets on games over which they may have some influence. The norm should be presented in the wake of ongoing investigations against football players who allegedly received money to carry out certain actions during matches, such as taking yellow card or red and take a penalty.

The text suggested by the Treasury also proposes the regulation of the betting market and provides for a greater collection of bookmakers. The debate in the government takes place amidst the scandal revealed by “Operação Penalidade Máxima”, triggered by the Public Ministry of Goiás, which investigates a manipulation scheme in Brazilian football games. If Lula actually signs the Provisional Measure, the matter will have to be approved by Congress to become a definitive law, despite having immediate effect.

PF INVESTIGATES

The CBF sent an official letter to the ministry in which it states that it has adopted measures to censor and punish such practices.
